December Newsletter
Welcome to the Edible Edinburgh newsletter. Edible Edinburgh is a cross-sector, city-wide partnership that aims to inspire and motivate everyone across Edinburgh to work together to build new approaches to food.
Our vision: Edinburgh is a city where good food is available and accessible for all, making for healthy people, thriving communities and a sustainable environment.
We join forces with UNICEF UK to feed families in Edinburgh
This week saw the distribution of the 'Green Globe' food hampers to families across the city to ensure children and families have access to food during the coronavirus crisis. These are the first of two themed food hampers being distributed across the holiday period as part of an Edible Edinburgh partnership project using grant funding from the Food Power for Generation Covid initiative. Partners Edinburgh Community Food are providing households with nutritious food hampers that are distributed through partner organisations in each of the cities four localities. The second themed hamper, 'Blue Planet', will be distributed in early January. Food Power for Generation Covid is delivered by Sustain: the alliance for better food and farming and Church Action on Poverty. The grant is funded by Soccer Aid for UNICEF UK.
Edible Edinburgh Working Group Updates
In recent months, the partnership's three newly established working groups Health, Economy and Sustainability have met to discuss actions that will drive forwards the delivery of the Edinburgh Sustainable Food Plan and contribute towards achieving the Sustainable Food Places Silver Award. A wide variety of groups and organisations are represented within our working groups including community growers, local food businesses and community food organisations. If you're interested in finding out more about the working groups and how you can get involved, please get in touch

Edinburgh Food Social - Community Christmas
This festive season, our partners at Edinburgh Food Social are cooking and distributing as many free Christmas meals as possible to those who need them in Edinburgh. The organisation founded the Food for Good coalition in March 2020, cooking 65,000 meals for those in need during the lockdown. Edinburgh Food Social are now creating another buzz in their community kitchen to provide a delicious, nutritious Christmas dinner for those who need it after what has been an incredibly tough year. The organisation is committed to supporting local growers and suppliers as well as providing work for displaced chefs and helping our local communities during this time. You can find out more details and how you can help here.
Edinburgh Farmers' Market Turning 20 in 2020
Congratulations to the Edinburgh Farmers' Market on reaching its 20th Year Anniversary this year! In February 2000 the Edinburgh Farmers' Market at Castle Terrace was established, on a pilot basis. Today, the market remains a busy and popular way for Edinburgh residents and visitors to buy fresh food and vegetables directly from local suppliers. In August 2020, the Farmers' Market Cooperative Committee (of market stall holders) took over the running of the weekly market from Essential Edinburgh. The Edinburgh Farmers' Market plays a role in supporting the strategic aims of Edible Edinburgh, as we continue to work to promote healthy, local, sustainable food as part of delivering economic and environmental benefits for our citizens.
Until next year!
Thank you to everyone that has engaged with and supported our work throughout this difficult year, including all of our partner organisations and funders. We hope you have a relaxing and restful festive season, whatever your plans are. We look forward to continuing working with you all in the new year.
