"Lead Like Him".  This is the mantra we have chosen at VicYouth for 2018.  Why? Well ultimately it lines up with our new-found focus:

"The local Church must become the primary target of Youth Ministry.  VicYouth's core function is to resource and build up youth ministry in the local church.  And is only effective when it is a response to local needs, guided by local connections, in the hands of local people."

We want to see the local Church thrive, in fact, we want it to be a thriving disciple making movement across Victoria, but we don't believe that will happen if the local Church doesn't have leaders that lead like Jesus.

So where does this start? Let me tell you something that might be a little uncomfortable.  It begins with you! It begins with me! It begins with those in a leadership position, and even those who don't have the 'title' but have been called to lead anyway, taking an in-depth look at their own lives and asking themselves this question: "Am I leading myself well?"

In Psalm 139:23-24 David says - "Search me, God, and know my heart; Test me and know my anxious thoughts.  See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting." this is a picture of genuine self-reflection.  Something we must all do from time to time, especially if we want to influence others for good through our leadership.

I like the way Clay Scroggins reflects on this topic in his book - "How to Lead When You Are Not In Charge"

"You can't get to where you want to be without knowing exactly where you are right now.  Why? Because leading yourself well requires and begins with being as self-aware as possible about where you are.  This is so extremely important to do, but it is not easy to do alone."

I couldn't agree more, "It is not easy" to do alone! So here's something practical you can try:

Spend 10 minutes a day, for seven days, with God, asking Him these three questions:

1. What am I good at?
2. What is holding me back?
3. What are the blind spots in my life?

Also, take 30 minutes during your 7-day trial to ask a person who is close to you the same three questions.  This will be painful! In fact, it could end up brutal to your ego! But it's definitely going to be worth it if you want to be a leader who influences people to be a part of God's Kingdom.
