5th October 2018
Carrum Downs & Robinvale Youth at Swann Hill for their Stormco Trip

I recently made a flying visit to New York City – literally and figuratively. I was there for a family wedding which could have been anywhere in the world I guess. But the couple chose NYC. I was the only family member outside the immediate family who attended. Why, you ask, go all that way for a wedding with all the expense involved?

Simple.
Family is precious. This particular family do not practice or express any Christian faith, except the mother who is Catholic. The wedding ceremony, held on Friday night, NYC time, didn’t have any elements of Christian faith in it. But my primary purpose in attending, was, as Paul says in scripture “to find common ground with everyone, doing everything I can to save some.”*

While there I did take the opportunity to explore sites I hadn’t on a previous visit. I also visited a number of churches, both in person and online. I was intrigued as to how the gospel is impacting such a large metropolis as New York City. On
Sabbath I took the subway up to Harlem to attend New York Ephesus SDA Church.  I soaked up the majestic sight of St. Patrick’s Cathedral, just up the street from where I was staying.

And I love Hillsong NYC’s mantra – ‘Occupy Every Street’ for Jesus. I did plenty of walking and subway travel while I was there, as you do, and on more than one occasion I found myself praying for the people of NYC as I was walking along; praying that the peoples of this great city will be reached with the message of Jesus.

Which brings me to Melbourne. If you hadn’t heard or noted, Melbourne’s population ticked over the five million
mark the last week in August. We ARE a BIG CITY! Not only is Melbourne Australia’s fastest growing city, but Victoria is Australia’s fastest growing state. But get this, there is only one city in Australia growing faster than Melbourne; our neighbouring city of Geelong.

So how are we tracking in reaching the
bourgeoning population of Melbourne with the gospel? Simon and the team have recently completed a well executed ‘Live With Purpose’ series and another is planned for 2019. VicYouth has a goal of 100 Life Groups across Victoria by 2020. And if you haven’t heard already, we have a city-wide outreach planned for 2019 with the It Is Written team to host a series of meeting across Melbourne.

What plans is your youth or young adults group dreaming up next year and beyond to reach those outside Christ?  On a personal level who is on your prayer list that you pray for regularly? Who are you personally investing time and resources in for Eternity? Are you living up to God’s call and obeying the promptings of the Holy Spirit on your life for this time?

Plan now to join us at MVMNT on October 19 & 20 as we celebrate what God has done and as we continue to set plans and ideas and dream for reaching Melbourne for Christ.

Let's plan now to occupy every street of Melbourne for Jesus.

We’re here to right the wrongs that hurt our society, giving them hope for light in the darkness. With God, we’re here to show the way.
