Thank You
On the 19th of May, 2018, Saturday just gone, it was the “National day of Thanks” - a time to thank God and each other for the many great things in our life. Plans for the weekend changed for me at the last minute, and I ended up finding myself playing the guitar at the Nunawading Adventurer meet where they were celebrating the “National day of Thanks”. Throughout the program several thank-yous were handed out. The one given to me was awesome!! I, along with the other guests of the day, received a box of Lindt Chocolates for my participation in the program. I should be clear, I'm not telling you this story to encourage you all to have chocolates ready for me when I drop by to see your clubs or churches (not that I would stop you if you wanted to do that ;) ), I'm sharing the story because my visit that day got me thinking about the power of saying thank you in our lives, and, in particular, in the ministry settings that we are a part of.
If there is one thing I have learnt about doing God's work, it's that a thankless ministry is a dying ministry. What I mean by that is - if the leaders of different ministries don't take time to say thank you to their most valuable assets, the people doing the work in the ministry, there is a good chance that ministry won't last long, or at best be a semi happening unit that for some reason seems to turn over staff regularly. In 1 Thessalonians 5:18 the Bible says - "give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus". My favourite thing about this Bible verse is that it encourages us to always carry a word of thanks. I have to admit, I haven't always done this, but imagine with me what it would be like to work in a ministry culture where people always carried a word of thanks. Wouldn't that be great?
Yes it would be great! But it’s not always the case - sometimes our ministry settings look more like the business setting Simon Sinek describes below, please note my emphasis and draw the comparisons [... ]:
“If you have to worry about [Church] politics, if you have to worry about someone stealing your credit, if you have to worry about your boss [ministry leader] not having your back, think about the energy you invest - not in your business [ministry], not in [the people] your products you are trying to develop, not in your work, not in how great you’re producing [disciples], not in your creativity, but in just keeping yourself feeling safe”.
Culture really does count, doesn't it! In fact, I would say it's the most essential thing in your ministry.
With all that said, let me start the movement by saying a huge thank you to everyone working in the different youth ministry settings across the Victorian Conference!! We really do appreciate your efforts and know that God notes your tireless and sacrificial service in the area of life that matters most! Let me also encourage you to say thank you, and to do your best to build a ministry culture that thrives and excels as we show appreciation towards those we couldn't do His work without. May God Bless you Richly!!
