Happy New Year to all our CENMAC users. We have really been enjoying our school visits and seeing how well students are using their assistive technology. As usual it is great to meet enthusiastic staff who are embracing the technology.

Here at CENMAC we are thrilled to be starting the year with Georgina Bull who comes to us with a wide range of teaching experience in both mainstream and SEN. She has particular experience of teaching young people with complex needs. Georgina has a Multi Sensory Impairment (MSI) qualification which I'm sure will be put to good use!  We welcome Georgina and look forward to working together.

Communication Works 2019
Our plans are underway for Communication Works 2019 so make sure you keep the Thursday 23 May free. This year we are looking to have a special focus on assistive technology for creativity and inclusion. More information on technology, seminars and speakers will be posted on our website.

The Partnership for Children

CENMAC are pleased to be members of the Children's Disability Council, alongside a number of other specialist organisations and provisions. Recently we heard about the Partnership for Children and the great work they are doing around mental health and wellbeing. We felt it important to share their good practice - see below for more details:

Partnership for Children's Programmes

 

Promote the mental health and emotional wellbeing of your pupils with Partnership for Children’s programmes. Zippy’s Friends and Apple’s Friends are school based mental health promotion programmes for 5-9 year olds. The programmes have been independently evaluated and found to improve children’s coping skills, social skills, emotional literacy and reduce bullying.

There is also an adapted version of Zippy’s Friends for pupils with SEND. If you are interested in delivering Zippy’s Friends or Apple’s Friends to your class, please visit Partnership for Children’s website for more information about training courses for teachers. 
Internet Safety

On Tuesday 5 February, Safer Internet Day 2019 was celebrated globally with the theme: Together for a better internet. Over  2,100 organisations and schools across the UK got involved to help inspire a national conversation about using technology responsibly, respectfully, critically and creatively. 


Find out about the sites your child uses, how to set security and keep your children and young people safe.

Plus, great videos to share with your child to start discussions about keeping safe

Here are a couple of handy buttons on your apple and windows web browser you may not know about.

Click to clear the clutter from the page and access the reader view. Great for students who can be visually distracted. Also change the font, text size and background colour. You will notice on the windows you can also select read aloud and on the iPad press and hold for the speak button (just make sure this is turned on in your accessibility tool menu).

Thank you to Snowsfields School for continuing to let us host our CENMAC Clicker 7 training -  they are a very welcoming and friendly school. We hope those who attended have been able to share and put into practice their enthusiasm and new skills with Clicker when returning to their schools.

Clicker 7 is being used in thousands of schools across the UK to help children with dyslexia overcome their barriers to writing. Clicker are hosting a series of FREE ‘Clicker and dyslexia’ breakfast seminars in your region this term; they really hope that you will be able to attend!
