Fund will partner with new system to develop medical coding credential program

Today the SEIU-UHW Joint Employer Education Fund (Education Fund) – which represents 100,000 SEIU eligible members and affiliated unions, and 18 employers – announced it will partner with the proposed fully online college to develop a credential program for workers to advance into the field of medical coding, a field projected to grow by 15 percent through 2024.

More than 80 percent of California’s medical coding certificates are currently from private colleges – an expensive option that is out of reach for many workers who are juggling family responsibilities and full-time jobs.

The Education Fund’s support for the fully online college stems from its quest to improve economic mobility for workers and help employers fill in-demand jobs. The fully online program will provide new access to career advancement and wage growth for working adults who have struggled to get ahead in today’s economy.

The labor-management organization joins a growing coalition of business, economic, equity, and education leaders who are counting on the Legislature to pass the Governor’s proposal to make higher education more equitable and accessible for all.

In Case You Missed It

Rebecca Miller, director of workforce development for SEIU-UHW, explains why the Governor’s proposal is a “game changer” for workers who cannot attend classes at community college campuses. Read more in Ed Source.
