ReflectUS Launches Initiative to Expand Women’s Political Leadership in Virginia

Richmond, Virginia (Apr. 13, 2022) ReflectUS, the national, cross-partisan coalition dedicated to increasing women’s political leadership across the country, has partnered with League of Women Voters of Virginia and Virginia Organizing to launch a statewide “Women’s Political Leadership Resolutions Campaign” that encourages local elected boards to strive for gender-balanced leadership when making appointments to local boards and commissions.

With a field office in Central Virginia, ReflectUS is dedicated to addressing the gender gap in elected local and state positions throughout the Commonwealth.  In Virginia, women represent roughly 27% of local governing elected positions and key appointed board and commission seats.  Studies show that diverse leadership, specifically political leadership by women, strengthens our democratic systems and institutions. Tiffany Gardner, ReflectUS CEO, commented: “This initiative provides an opportunity for local leaders to recognize the value of women’s contributions to their communities, as well as provide opportunities for leadership development and advancement.”

Deb Wake, president of ReflectUS Partner Organization, League of Women Voters of Virginia observed, “Women are often reluctant to step into leadership roles, not because they don’t want to, but because they feel unprepared for these roles.” Wake continued, “Gaining experience through appointed leadership positions at the local level builds skills and confidence for emerging women leaders.”  This was echoed by Brian Johns, Executive Director for ReflectUS Partner Organization, Virginia Organizing. “Our leaders' lived experiences should mirror those of the community they serve. It makes sense to make equal representation at every level of government a top priority.”

ReflectUS is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, cross partisan coalition that accelerates and maximizes the collective impact of Coalition members, people, and organizations working to expand political leadership of, by, and for all women. Learn More
