Your vote matters, make sure you are registered today.
We are continuing some dynamic conversations through our 19th Amendment Centennial Speaker Series “Looking Back to Move Forward”. We hope you can join us for our next conversation on Thursday, August 13th at 7pm ET with Founder and CEO of Vote Mama Liuba Grechen Shirley. She will be sharing about Vote Mama’s important work helping young mothers run for office and win!
We just started our monthly ReflectUS Fireside Chats where we dig deeper on issues impacting gender parity in politics. We will be talking with academics, experts, candidates, and elected officials on these important matters. Our first Fireside Chat was last night with Genevieve Collins, a seventh generation Texan and lifelong Republican. In fact, her grandmother, Calvert Collins, a true trailblazer, was the first woman elected to the Dallas City Council. Genevieve has built upon that legacy of service with her own work. We had a wonderful conversation about the importance of supporting women in their quest for political leadership.
Finally, please enjoy the “Coalition Spotlight Section” of our newsletter. Each month we will highlight the important work of one of our Coalition members. This month we are highlighting the work of IGNITE and their recently released Sophia Voting Bot, that helps make voting simple. Meet Sophia on our co-branded resource page and she will help you get your state-specific voting plan today!
We look forward to seeing you at our upcoming events!
All the best,
Tiffany Gardner, ReflectUS CEO
COALITION MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: IGNITE
IGNITE is a movement of young women who are ready and eager to become the next generation of political leaders. IGNITE is also the largest, most diverse nonpartisan young women’s political leadership organization. Seventy-three percent (73%) of IGNITE’s program participants are young women of color. IGNITE has developed a full lifecycle of targeted programming, networking, education, and mentoring to build a vast talent pool of next generation civic and political leaders. Until the election, IGNITE is working hard to Get Out The Vote among Gen Z women and has developed Sophia The VoteBot to make voting simple. You can now meet Sophia on the ReflectUS resource page.
Andrea Flores has been involved with the ReflectUS Community since January of 2020 and is currently serving as one of our interns. Recently, Andrea worked on the Boards and Commissions Guides for Dallas County. After working on the Guides, she shared her interest in political leadership roles, "I’ve always wanted to apply for Boards/Commissions. When ReflectUS allowed me to do the research for my home town of Cedar Hill, that’s when I was given the information I needed."
After Andrea applied and was interviewed, she was appointed to the Planning & Zoning Commission in Cedar Hill! Currently, 8 of the 31 cities in Dallas County have less than 1 woman serving on the Planning and Zoning Board for their City. Andrea is now the youngest woman to serve on the Commission and is excited to help her community. The Planning & Zoning Boards for each city are responsible for making recommendations to the City Council regarding planning and zoning matters. They determine what lands are commissioned for use and a variety of other important matters. Visit our YouTube Channel to learn about city structures, civic participation, and much more in our Understanding City Governance video.
We are continuing our 19th Amendment Centennial Speaker Series "Looking Back to Move Forward," and hope that you have enjoyed hearing from our amazing speakers! A big thank you to Opal Mauldin-Jones with the City of Lancaster in Dallas County for speaking with us last month. Here are some upcoming events:
August 13, 2020 at 1 PM ET Representing the Future | A Conversation with SURGExReflectUS ReflectUS CEO Tiffany Gardner will be joining a conversation with SURGE documentary film directors and producers, Hannah Rosenzweig and Wendy Sachs. Join Laura Brounstein, VP of Content & Programming at The Riveter, as she dives into what the film SURGE highlights and what this means for the future/upcoming elections as well as ReflectUS’s work and partnership with the nine leading women’s organizations working to increase the number of women in office and achieve equal representation across the racial, ideological, ethnic and geographic spectrum.
August 13, 2020 at 7 PM ET Fixing a Broken System - How Unpaid Labor Limits Women's Political Power
Join us on as we hear from Liuba Grechen Shirley, Vote Mama Founder and CEO. Globally, the expectation of women being the main providers of Unpaid Labor has been socially constructed and enforced by gender norms. Even when women are employed full-time outside the house, they may perform a greater share of household chores and childcare activities. We can't wait for this informative webinar on how unpaid labor can limit a woman's political power and what some of the strides are that we can make to change this.
August 27, 2020 at 7 PM ET Thinking Outside the Box to Achieve Gender Political Parity Cynthia Richie Terrell, Founder and Executive Director for ReflectUS Coalition Member RepresentWomen. Cynthia will be explaining what today's political spectrum looks like to give us a further understanding of the equal representation movement. We are excited to learn more about how we can achieve greater gender political party together!
