January 2021
Dear ReflectUS Community,

Happy New Year!

We are entering an exciting year with a record number of women serving in the 117th Congress and a record number serving in state legislatures. We are thrilled to welcome these women in their newly elected or reelected roles in government. We look forward to the continued upward trend in greater representation of women in politics.

In honor of the exceptional success women had at the polls this past election cycle, the ReflectUS Coalition will be hosting a special event sponsored by Comcast NBCUniversal to welcome and celebrate the women members of Congress. "A Conversation on Women's Political Leadership" will take place on January 14 at 6:00 PM ET. Select members of Congress from across the country will be discussing the significant strides women have made in recent years, as well as the steps needed to continue this momentum. The panel, moderated by NBC Washington journalist Eun Yang, will consist of Congresswoman Marilyn Strickland of Washington's 10th congressional district, Congresswoman Lauren Underwood of Illinois's 14th congressional district, with more to be announced. Seats are limited so I would encourage you to register now to secure your spot! Visit the event page, A Conversation on Women's Political Leadership, to learn more and secure your virtual seat.

If the new year has inspired you to make an impact and you are interested in political leadership, we are still accepting applications for our “It Begins Here” Fellowship program for the North Texas community. The application can be found here, with a deadline of January 15, 2021.

This year promises to be an exciting year for women's political representation. Let's stand together!

RepresentWomen is a research and advocacy hub focused on identifying and addressing the systemic barriers which hinder women’s equal participation at every level of politics. Our data-driven electoral reforms allow women to run, win, serve and lead at equal rates to men. The United States is at a critical juncture, our electoral system continues to fail women; 101 years after the 19th Amendment, women only make up 27% of the 117th Congress, and the U.S. is ranked 68th in the world for gender balance in the legislature.

Our electoral system fails to represent the growing diversity in our nation to  correct this we need ...
  1. Recruitment and donation targets to get more women to RUN for office.
  2. Fair voting systems like ranked choice voting in multi-seat districts so more women WIN.
  3. Legislative reforms including universal childcare, proxy voting, and paid family leave so women can SERVE effectively and rise through the ranks to leadership positions.
  4. Gender balanced appointments and hiring so more women can LEAD.
Our research includes:
  • Ranked Choice Voting (RCV): this voting system used in 19 jurisdictions across the U.S. has significantly improved the representation of women and people of color in local office. To learn more about how RCV helps elect women watch our new video.
  • PACs and Donors: have an active role to play in leveling the political playing field, by committing to donation targets for women candidates. Learn more about the role of money in the 2020 Congressional elections in our new blog
  • Gender Parity Index: ranks and grades all 50 states on the state of women’s representation at the local, state and national level. Learn more in our 2020 Report
And so much more!
