Dolly's new documentary, The Library That Dolly Built, is coming to Pulaski County April 2, 2020 at 7:00pm!  It will be showing in North Little Rock at Regal McCain and in Little Rock at The Movie Tavern.  You can purchase tickets here!  A portion of the proceeds will support Pulaski County Imagination Library and its mission.
Early Literacy Skills
Early literacy is everything a child knows about reading and writing before he or she can read or write.  Six basic skills comprise early literacy and help determine whether a child will be ready to learn to read and write.  Learn more on our website!

Why is it important?
It’s much easier to read a word when it’s a word you already know. Children with bigger vocabularies have an easier time when they start to read, since it’s much easier for them to make sense of what they’re sounding out.

Activities to Promote Vocabulary

  • Use words your child may not be familiar with when you talk.
  • Take time before or during the reading of a book to explain an unfamiliar word (do not replace unfamiliar words).
  • Talk about the different meanings of a word: wave, cap, bat
  • Add synonyms to exchange new words for familiar words.
  • Add descriptive words.
  • Talk about the feelings characters in the story might have, even if those words are not used in the book.
  • Read non-fiction books too. They have different vocabulary from storybooks.
  • After reading a book, go back to an interesting picture and talk about it, adding less familiar words.
  • Use words for things that happened in the past and will happen in the future.
  • For preschoolers, explain differences in words with similar meanings.
  • Show real items when possible (moss, mango); for babies and toddlers, point to and name objects.
  • Use specific words rather than “it,”, “this,” “that,” “here," “there”.
PCIL Needs Your Help!
We depend on volunteers to get children registered for the Imagination Library program.  We need office assistants, runners, and data clerks every month.  Please check our Events Calendar for dates and times, then go to SignUp Genius to fill a slot.  You can be a part of getting books to children in Pulaski County!
