Bring Your Expertise and Experience to the SHTA Board
The Superior Hiking Trail Association seeks new volunteer Board members to replace those whose terms are expiring in May 2021.

Our Board serves as the governing body of the Association and works closely with our staff to accomplish our ambitious strategic goals. Although we are always interested in recruiting avid SHT users to join the Board, we are equally excited to invite those who are passionate in supporting equity and inclusion in outdoor recreation to apply. Applications will be accepted through March 31, 2021.

We hope to hear from you! Click here to learn more and apply for this unique volunteer opportunity.
Expanding Outdoor Access One Trailhead At A Time
A project to expand the trailhead parking area at Lake County Road 6, near the Section 13 cliffs, is underway to better serve Trail users and other visitors to the scenic recreation area.

The Association has coordinated with Lake County on the expansion, which will offer nearly four times the current parking capacity. In addition to providing more access to SHT users and climbers who enjoy the nearby cliffs for their sport, the new parking lot will be built at a more ecologically-sound location near the current lot to add a protective buffer for the nearby Sawmill Creek. Once the new parking area is built, the old lot will be given back to the forest.

We expect the new trailhead parking area to be opened later this year. In the meantime, the existing parking area remains open for winter use.
A Thank You to All Who Stepped Up for the SHT in 2020
After a challenging year for so many in our trail community, we are excited to follow the blazes and turn our focus towards the 2021 trail season.

However, it is worth reflecting on how the adversities faced in 2020 unveiled the true commitment and kindness of many -- our board members, volunteers, staff, and supporters -- who stepped up in unexpected ways to keep the Trail and the Association in good shape. 2020 showcased the strength and resiliency of the Superior Hiking Trail Association and our trail community.

Before we launch the next leg of our journey, our staff took a moment to share their gratitude for the many good people and lessons learned throughout the past year.
New Route Coming Near Silver Creek
The Association has gained permission for a new route through the Silver Creek area to be built later this spring.

In the meantime, a short section of the SHT from Gun Club Road to Silver Creek Campsite has been closed at the request of a private landowner. The Trail remains open from Reeves Road Trailhead to Gun Club Road and from Lake County Road 301 Trailhead to Silver Creek Campsite. The SHTA has hired a contractor to plow the Lake County Road 301 Trailhead so that trail users can continue to enjoy the popular snowshoeing route from the trailhead to Silver Creek this winter.

Learn more about the temporary closure, and be sure to check the Trail Conditions page for updates like this before you head to the SHT.
