Remembering and Honoring our Friend, Tom Peterson

The Superior Hiking Trail Association is deeply saddened to share the news of the passing of one of our long time friends and founders, Tom Peterson. Tom has been involved with the SHT since it was simply a dream. He was a dedicated visionary who worked tirelessly as trail coordinator in the late 80s and early 90s. Through his efforts he laid the groundwork, quite literally, for the Superior Hiking Trail we all know and love today.

Tom's dedication to the North Shore didn't end with his SHT work. He also worked on efforts supporting the North Shore State Trail, Gitchi-Gami State Trail, and several other public trail networks. Tom has certainly left a strong legacy along the North Shore which we'll all work to uphold. He has been a lifelong friend of the Trail and North Shore community. Tom will be fondly remembered and sorely missed by many.

The SHTA Welcomes a New Member of the Team

We’d like to take a moment to introduce Matt Kraska to the SHT community. Matt is the new Communications and Development Director for the Superior Hiking Trail Association. As a life-long Minnesotan and outdoor enthusiast, he understands the importance the SHT plays in the lives of those who live along and visit the North Shore. Matt holds a degree in Outdoor Education and Recreation from the University of MN - Duluth. He has spent the majority of his career thus far working for outdoor recreation organizations including North Cascades Institute in the PNW and the Voyageur Outward Bound School in Ely, where he led program initiatives focused on increasing diversity, equity and inclusion on public lands. Most importantly, and you will soon experience, Matt is great with people and quickly connects and develops relationships.

Fun fact - Matt’s earliest PR stint with the SHTA was over a decade ago when he caught wind from fellow hikers that the Duluth section of the SHT “didn’t matter.” Well, Matt felt differently, so he enlisted a group of friends to hike the entire SHT Duluth section over the course of one day to draw attention to its unique beauty. Sam Cook of the Duluth News Tribune covered the story!

The New Guidebook Has Arrived
Superior Hiking Trail Guidebook - 9th Edition
Superior Hiking Trail Guidebook - 9th Edition
With many changes and improvements to the SHT over recent years, a new guidebook has followed. While miles of trail were being improved, our staff have been hard at work updating our guidebook to reflect all the changes. The new layout is designed with industry best practices in place. The ninth edition now offers a more comprehensive, thorough narrative of the Trail, including concise and updated data to better support trail users in experiencing the SHT.

We are excited to introduce you to the Ninth Edition of the Superior Hiking Trail Guidebook!

Visit our Online Trail Store to check out the new guidebook, maps, and other goods to help you get out on the Trail this summer.

All sales support the SHT!
