GIVING TUESDAY - Today's the Day!

Today is Giving Tuesday, the day to support the causes, organizations, and trails that mean the most to you. Why not give back to the Trail that’s given so much to you?

Building and protecting the Superior Hiking Trail has always been an ambitious undertaking, and doing so is made possible by supporters like you.

Visit www.superiorhiking.org/donate/ to support our work in protecting, renewing, and enhancing the trail we all cherish.

We couldn’t do this without you and truly appreciate the support!

Wishing A Longtime Staff Member Happy Trails

By week’s end, we will be saying “Happy Trails” to our longtime staff member Jo Swanson.

Many of you may know Jo by her trail name “Someday.” Well, some day has finally come and she’s saying goodbye, for now, to the Superior Hiking Trail. Jo has been on our staff for over 6 years and has given everything to this trail. This spring, she plans to hike both the Foothills Trail (South Carolina) and Bartram Trail (Georgia/North Carolina). In June, she’ll start her long anticipated adventure on the Continental Divide Trail heading southbound.

If you have had the pleasure of working with Jo over the years, you know she makes work and volunteering fun. In this spirit, we decided to have some fun her last week and put her through a “very public exit interview.” Check out some of the highlights below:

What will you miss the most about working for the SHTA?

Geeking out! I love working with people (staff and volunteers!) who also love the trail, and I will miss being part of the effort to ensure that this resource continues to be there for people, just as it was there for me when I needed it.

What was one of your proudest moments from your years with the SHTA?

I spent a lot of my free time hiking the SHT and several times I ran into volunteers doing their maintenance work. This always filled me with joy. I could usually recall their names from the volunteer spreadsheet even if I’d never met them in person before. I loved getting to thank them while they were caught in the act of volunteering.

Share some fun facts with us about your time on the SHT.

I’ve camped at Penn Creek Campsite 3 times. Strangely, the 3 worst storms I’ve experienced while on the SHT coincided with those 3 nights.

I have still seen 0 bears on the Superior Hiking Trail! (I did, however, hear 2 bears. Which is something. But not much.)

The coldest night I spent on the trail was -14 at Silver Creek Campsite. A snowshoe hare poked its head into the mesh of my tent to see what was wrong with me.

If you'd like to share a message with Jo, please send us an email at info@superiorhiking.org.

Please join us in wishing Jo all the best in her future adventures. Thank you Jo for being a steward of the Trail! You will be greatly missed.
