Virtual Volunteer Events Coming This Spring
The Superior Hiking Trail Association is pleased to welcome our volunteers to a series of virtual events to thank, support, and prepare volunteers for the 2021 trail season.

These events will be geared towards the Superior Hiking Trail Association’s incredible volunteers and those interested in learning what volunteers contribute to the SHTA. While registration is required, events are free, family-friendly, and open to anyone interested in joining us.

Be Mindful On Muddy Trails This Spring
When the Trail is wet and soggy, please stay off to avoid causing damage to the tread.
Spring is just a few days away, and warmer weather is finally here! While we encourage you to get outside to recreate, please keep in mind that the Trail needs some time to thaw and dry out to avoid damage.

Much of the SHT is currently covered in ice, squishy snow, or on its way to being mud. The  SHT inside the City of Duluth will be closed soon until the end of the spring thaw. Beyond  the Trail itself, many of our trailhead parking areas (and the roads to access them) remain snow-covered or have turned to muck and mud. You can help avoid damaging the Trail and our trailheads by staying off where conditions are wet.

As you wait for the Trail to dry out, we have a couple ideas to help you get ready for your treks on the Trail this year
  • Get your gear ready for trips later this year: organize your tent and cookware, treat your hiking clothes with permethrin to protect yourself from ticks, learn how to best pack your backpack and give it a test run on a local trail. Preparing now will pay dividends on the Trail later!
  • Check out the recordings from our recent webinars for Absolute Beginners and SHT Thru-hikers. Both contain a wealth of information to help you enjoy the SHT.
  • Order a guidebook and map set from our online shop (or pick them up from a local retailer) to get started on planning your 2021 trips. Digital SHT maps are also available through the Avenza Maps app.
As always, before you head to the SHT, check out our Trail Conditions page for updates.
Celebrate Your Birthday By Giving Back to the Trail
Our friend and legendary shuttle driver Harriet Quarles chose to celebrate her recent birthday by organizing a Facebook Fundraiser for the SHTA.
Do you have a birthday coming up and want to include the SHT in your celebration?

It's easier than ever to use Facebook Fundraisers to inspire your friends to join you in supporting the Trail for your birthday — or any time of year. Harriet gave it a try and suggests you do too!

Are you interested in other ways to give back to the Trail? Visit our Ways to Give page to see a few other simple options to show your love for the SHT.
See Something? Say Something Through the Trail Incident Report
Nobody wants to encounter an unexpected issue on the Trail! Help us resolve them quickly by using our Trail Incident Report form. 📷: Andrea Linnea
Downed tree? Washed out bridge? Something that doesn't look right? As you head out for early spring treks on the Trail, please help us plan spring maintenance by reporting any issues you encounter through our Trail Incident Report form.

Our staff and volunteers regularly inspect the Trail for issues, but trail users like you can also help serve as the eyes and ears out on the SHT. If you see something that needs attention or witness suspicious behavior from other trail users, please say something so that the Association can address the problem and keep the SHT in good shape. And remember -- if you or another SHT user ever needs medical attention or a law-enforcement response, call 911 immediately. Thank you in advance for helping us maintain and protect the Trail!
