ASSISTANCE DOGS OF HAWAII - January 2022
Making New Friends at Maui Ocean Center
The Advanced Training Class enjoyed a field trip to the Maui Ocean Center to practice distraction training and experience sea life. They said hello to the honus (Hawaiian sea turtles) and met the stingrays and black tip reef sharks up close in the open ocean tunnel. Georgia, Gidget, Grace and Gigi all performed wonderfully as they experienced many new sights, sounds and smells.

Valentine's Benefit Event!

Our annual Valentine's Benefit Event will take place Saturday, February 12th, at the Four Season's Resort in Wailea. We are planning a fun evening that includes a gourmet dinner, live and silent auctions, and presentations by some of our inspiring graduates.  All COVID-19 safety precautions will be in place.
A special mahalo to our event sponsors: Dowling Company, Inc., Leslie Ann Yokouchi Foundation Fund, The Rice Partnership and Four Season's Resort. Tickets are sold out, but you can call our office to be placed on a waiting list (808-298-0167).

COVID-19 Scent Detection Pilot Project

Our Super Sniffers are back on the job, learning to identify and alert to the Omicron variant. Sadie and Tess participated in our first COVID-19 detection research study last year. They are joined by Tess's daughters, Grace and Georgia, for our current study. We are working with The Queen's Medical Center, Hawaii Film Safety and Doris Todd Christian Academy on this pilot project. The dogs will soon begin screening for COVID-19 at an elementary school. Our goal is that dogs will be able to provide an additional layer of screening at public places and help prevent the spread of infection. Accreditation Complete!

This month, Assistance Dogs of Hawaii successfully completed our re-accreditation through Assistance Dogs International (ADI). ADI is the global authority in the Assistance Dogs Industry and programs must meet the rigorous requirements and high standards to be fully accredited. The re-accreditation process takes place every 5 years and involves examining all aspects of our program. We're proud to have been members of Assistance Dogs International for the past 15 years!

Book Signing at The Shops at Wailea

J.McLaughlin recently hosted a book signing for ADH at their "Sip and Shop". Executive Director, Maureen Maurer, was on hand to sign copies of "Wonder Dogs: True Stories of Extraordinary Assistance Dogs". We thank the management at J.McLaughlin who generously donated 15% of their sales during the event to ADH. "Wonder Dogs" received national coverage this month as Mo gave interviews for several radio stations and podcasts.
