COVID-19 Detection Study Underway

Four dogs from Assistance Dogs of Hawaii – Sadie, Tess, Yuki and Samson -- are participating in a major research study to teach dogs to detect the scent of coronavirus in people and to help prevent the spread of disease. Once trained, coronavirus detection dogs can be deployed in ports of entry and public gatherings, to provide rapid, non-invasive screening for COVID-19. This work may prove integral in the fight against coronavirus and be a method of screening large numbers of individuals very quickly. ADH’s research partners include The Queen’s Medical Center on Oahu, Medical Detection Dogs of UK, and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. Volunteers are currently being recruited on Oahu. For more information, visit our website or contact The Queen’s Medical Center at 808-691-8761. Click here for recent coverage from KITV4 News!

Thank You, Declan Levin!

Ever since his 5th birthday – for 14 years now -- Declan Levin has collected donations for Assistance Dogs of Hawaii in lieu of birthday gifts. As a participant in the annual Maui Visitor Industry Charity Walk, his gifts were matched every year. This year, the walk was canceled due to COVID-19, but that didn’t stop Declan! Although he’s away at college in Utah studying to be an architect, he sent out letters to friends and family for his birthday, collecting $2,020 in donations for ADH! Declan made the donation in honor of his late grandparents, who shared their love of animals with him. Over the years, Declan has raised a whopping $24,000 for ADH and has become a wonderful advocate for our services. Thank you Declan, for your caring heart and dedication to our mission!
Note: If anyone would like to match Declan's donation this year, please let us know!

Puppy of the Month: Grace!

Grace is a friendly, curious and attentive four-month-old puppy from the G-litter. She lives on Oahu with third time puppy-raiser Renee Tomita, who also happened to raise Grace’s mother, Tess. Grace has a sweet disposition, enjoys meeting new people and going to work at the hospital with Renee. At home, she loves to play with squeaky toys and run around with Renee’s dog Maiya. Thank you, Renee, for giving Grace a great start as an Assistance Dog!
