ASSISTANCE DOGS OF HAWAII - February 2021

Meeting with the Mayor!

Executive Director, Maureen Maurer, and Facility Dog Director, Dr. Cate Dorr, met earlier this month with the County of Maui COVID-19 task force to give a presentation on our COVID-19 Scent Detection research. The mayor of Maui County attended along with representatives of Maui's police department, fire department, national guard, Kahului Airport and TSA. The hope is to share our training protocol with other agencies to help provide additional screening at places like the airport, events and schools. Mo and Cate are pictured above with Maui Mayor Michael Victorino, and two of our scent detection dogs, Sadie and Tess.

Congratulations Tiffany and Yana!

Yana just completed Team Training Camp with her new partner, Tiffany Prangnell, Director of Imua Physical Therapy! Yana will focus on helping cancer patients during their healing process. Yana is already quite familiar with the day-to-day operations of their four clinics on Maui, since Tiffany and her family helped to raise Yana. Yana was able to experience each of the clinics during her Basic Training and so is ready to start her life's work helping to comfort and support patients right here on Maui.

Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam Visit

Therapy Dogs Sadie and Samson reported for duty at the AFMS Hickman 15th Medical Group this month. The dogs provided much needed stress relief to the Airmen that are working there as the past year has been especially challenging for those serving our country. The Military Health System is a large and complex health care institution that serves our nation's military personnel. The visit was a huge success as the dogs were able to provide stress relief and bring joy and laughter during their stay. For more information about JBPHH, please go to their website HERE.

Happy Birthday Ally!

Ally Tamayose is an important member of the ADH ohana. This month she had a birthday fundraiser that raised $1020 to support ADH so that more people can benefit from assistance dogs like she has. Ally is a brave young girl who was diagnosed with osteosarcoma 3 years ago. She has undergone numerous surgeries, treatments, chemotherapy, and countless stays in the hospital. She is thankful for the support of her family and friends, including ADH Facility Dogs, Winnie, Samson and Ruby, who were often by her bedside when she needed them the most. Despite facing overwhelming challenges, Ally's focus is on helping others and finding the positive in every situation. If you would like to donate to Ally's birthday fundraiser, please click HERE.

Puppy of the Month: Gigi!

Gigi is an active and playful 7-month-old puppy from the G-litter who were born on Maui last summer. She is currently in Basic Training with her wonderful puppy-raisers, Lisa Gentry and family. Gigi has enjoyed recent visits to the local library, Target, and Kapiolani Hospital where she was exceptionally good at ignoring distractions and learning to go in and out of elevators. Thank you, Gentry Family, for giving Gigi such a great start to her career as an Assistance Dog!
