Did you know that virtual meetings take 3 times the amount of energy and focus than face-to-face meetings? It's because 85-90% of our communication is done through non-verbal cues: eye contact, facial expressions, body language, gestures, timing. This means:
Our brains are trying to find the same meaning and connection though it's far more difficult to navigate over a device. (A reason why people use devices to hide too) @curt_thompson_md says it's like trying to use your cell phone in the middle of the woods with little to no signal. The device is working overtime to get you the same data.
We are looking at ourselves while engaging others. I used to have to watch videos of myself counseling clients during grad school. The anxiety! Who wants to see their forehead wrinkles accentuated every time they show some concern?
As kids do online school and as parents continue the never-ending virtual meetings, try to innovate around having face-to-face connections whenever possible. Don't be surprised when your little one (or YOU) are more tired, grumpy, and overstimulated at the end of the day.
Though we hoped we'd be back to some sense of "normal", 2020 has stayed on brand. We were never made for a virtual world and though it's been so helpful to keep business, counseling, relationships going, we also need to remember what it's doing to our brains, our bodies, and our egos.
Because of Grace,

Words of Love "Rather, you must grow in the grace and knowledge
of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ."- 2 Peter 3:18
Perhaps you are familiar with the Japanese tradition of transforming broken ceramic items by fusing them back together with beautiful gold paint to bring the item to wholeness in a magnificent way. Similarly, when God's grace fills in our brokenness, we are made new and transformed into His image through grace. In a magnificent way!
"And the vessel he was making of clay was spoiled in the potter's hand, and he reworked it into another vessel, as it seemed good to the potter to do."Jeremiah 18:4
"But he said to me, My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness, so that Christ's power may rest on me." 2 Corinthians 12:9
God is able to transform our brokenness into something beautiful for His glory. Through the cracks or mistakes, his grace is able to make us whole.
Grace is God's unmerited favor and undeserving love and goodness. It feels like being known and loved despite our behaviors (and we know our kids have some behaviors).
God does this perfectly, but giving grace to our kids can be as simple as saying “yes” instead of “no.” Cuddling or playing a game when they should be doing work. It might look like letting a chore go today or asking questions rather than giving a lecture. Sometimes it’s gifting our kids when they don’t deserve it and reminding them that this is how God blesses us - even when we don’t “deserve it.”
