Dear <<First Name>> <<Last Name>>

Tashi Delek and Happy Losar! At the beginning of the Earth Dog Year, we are writing to you with greetings and news from Lawudo Gompa & Retreat Center in Solu Khumbu, Nepal.

As you will know, Lawudo Gompa is the most remote retreat centre in the FPMT and the home of Kyabje Zopa Rinpoche in his previous life. Located high in the Himalayas, it offers a unique opportunity to visit and do either group or individual retreat within a traditional Sherpa culture.

We are a group of volunteers calling ourselves LoveLawudo who are exploring how we can all support the Director of Lawudo, Sangay Sherpa, with the challenge of enabling this remote and beautiful place to survive and thrive in the 21st century.

Volunteer opportunity

Sangay’s first request is to find some Dharma students who would like to spend a few months at Lawudo as a volunteer.

Ideally these will be people who have already visited Lawudo and understand the physical and mental challenges of living there. Tasks include cleaning and preparing bedrooms, cleaning and making water offerings in the gompa, general maintenance, and helping to carry water and shopping. There is more information on the Lawudo website including an inspiring interview with Simone Fry, who has just spent 12 months at Lawudo as a volunteer.

Lawudo news

Lawudo suffered extensive damage from the 2015 earthquake, and is grateful for the support it has received from the FPMT’s Earthquake Relief Fund to carry out immediate repairs. Ongoing projects include rebuilding the buildings around the cave, repairing the prayer wheel house and tsa tsa house, and restoring the front courtyard.

In 2016, a large Padmasambhava statue arrived at Lawudo, you can read more about this extraordinary achievement here. In 2017 other new statues have arrived, among which are various manifestations of Guru Rinpoche.

The water supply continues to be a challenge. Water is currently pumped up the mountainside from the spring below through a rubber hose, a fragile arrangement that often fails in bad weather and means that water has to be carried by hand instead. Sangay’s aims for 2018 include installing a long-term water supply and taking forward Rinpoche’s vision for a monastery at Lawudo. We will circulate more information as plans unfold.

Group pilgrimages

In March 2018 Venerable Robina Courtin will be leading a second pilgrimage to Lawudo. Please click here for details.

“It is beneficial to go to Lawudo” says Ven Robina “because it’s a place that has been blessed by the presence of holy beings, starting with our precious Lama Zopa Rinpoche, the Lawudo Lama himself. This is one of the main prerequisites for a conducive place to meditate. These days Rinpoche has plans to develop a Guru Rinpoche Pure Land up there. His kind sister, Ani Ngawang Samten has spent her life serving there. She is now in her seventies and needs help just to run the place, for sure. When I told Rinpoche last year that a group of us was going up there, Rinpoche said, ‘You won’t want to come back!’”

In October 2018 Venerable Amy Miller will be leading another pilgrimage to Lawudo. Please click here for details.

“Since 1990, I have informally led some people to Lawudo during the many retreats I have done there.” says Ven Amy “Yet, I’ve always had the wish to lead a small group of people to Lawudo with the idea to enjoy the stunning scenery and trekking experience, and also to do a short retreat and visit some of the holy places in the area.”
