In the spotlight

Nearly 120 participants of the 2019 Forum of Experts in SEEA-EEA in Glen Cove wave hello to the camera flying overhead.
From 26-27 June 2019, nearly 120 experts from around the world gathered in Glen Cove, NY for the third Forum of Experts in SEEA-EEA. The Forum brought together statistical, geospatial, ecological and environmental experts from countries, international organizations and academia to discuss ecosystem accounting and make progress towards a revised SEEA-EEA.
The UNCEEA gathered at UNHQ from 23-24 June 2019 to discuss coordination and prioritization in the field of environmental-economic accounting. Topics from the ongoing revision of the SEEA-EEA to the use of case studies to promote the mainstreaming of the accounts were discussed.

The chief economist of the IUCN discusses the valuation of ecosystem services in the context of the Experimental Ecosystem Accounting revision and efforts to protect biodiversity.
Data Structure Definitions for the SEEA have been finalized and released, marking an important milestone in the development of global SEEA databases.
In May, the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) released a landmark new report. During the launch, Sir Bob Watson (former IPBES chair), outlined much-needed transformative changes, which include a role for natural capital accounting.
The Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) has released the first order drafts of the chapters of the IPBES methodological assessment regarding the diverse conceptualization of multiple values of nature and its benefits, including biodiversity and ecosystem functions and services (IPBES values assessment). Natural Capital Accounting for Policymaking in Europe

To better understand whether the policy targets of the European Union's Biodiversity Strategy to 2020 and the Seventh Environmental Action Programme are being met, the European Environment Agency has published a comprehensive report based on SEEA-EEA and SEEA CF accounts, with several notable findings.

Natural Capital Accounting and Valuation of Ecosystem Services Project

The SEEA EEA Forum of Experts held at Glen Cove provided an opportunity for a workshop involving the project teams from the five countries participating in The Natural Capital Accounting and Valuation of Ecosystem Services (NCAVES) project – Brazil, China, India, Mexico and South Africa – to share their experiences and lessons learnt two years into the project.
South Africa's First Natural Capital Accounting Forum
South Africa's first ever Natural Capital Accounting Forum, hosted by Statistics South Africa in partnership with the South African National Biodiversity Institute, convened a wide range of actors to share exciting highlights from South Africa's new national land and ecosystem accounts.
