New Year | New Land | New Forests

Innovating Forest Management in the Chignecto Isthmus.

We're excited to announce that we kicked off 2021 by securing an additional 400 acres of land in the Chigencto Isthmus. That means we now care for 922 acres in this very special region! Come springtime, we'll be planting more than 350,000 climate adaptive trees on the new and existing parcels of land under our care.

We are using the forests we steward to put into practice our climate-adaptive approach to forest management. In leading by example, we hope to inspire other small landowners to join us on the journey towards a thriving future forest. This means putting climate resilience, biodiversity restoration, and forest restoration at the centre of our management plans.

Meanwhile, in Zanzibar...

Community Forests has been working around the clock to restart programming after the pandemic and political instability of 2020.

In a few short weeks, Community Forests Pemba has restarted work and launched the new VIUNGO Project! In partnership with local organisations, VIUNGO (Swahili for "ingredients") is an ambitious four-year project aimed at increasing food and nutrition security in the region. From climate smart horticulture programmes to women-led enterprise and marketing, this project will directly benefit over 20,000 individuals and families over the four years.

We're also excited to welcome over 20 new members of staff onto the Community Forests Pemba team. Headquartered in the new Unguja island office, these new team members are working to expand CFP's reach across the Zanzibari islands. We'll be introducing the team soon, so stay tuned on our social media!
