It was an honor to receive an invitation to curate an exhibition of art by four of my favorite artists: Picasso, Chagall, Dalí and Miró. The work of these great masters is still so compelling and relevant today, half a century or more later. Each artist developed a unique pictorial language, pioneering new styles and techniques that had yet to be explored. Although they each had distinctly different artistic voices, their work dialogues in a fascinating and profound way that brings new meaning to their iconic images. This exhibit is a delightful exploration of these titans of twentieth century art and the works that have shaped the way we experience art today.

The exhibition, Modern Masters: Picasso, Chagall, Dalí and Miró, will be hosted by Ocean Galleries in Stone Harbor, NJ from June 29 – July 9. I will be in the gallery from June 29 – July 1 for the curatorial receptions and would be delighted to have you join us!

This Picasso, “Le Danseur (Tête d’Histrion)” is a trial proof of a linocut created in 1965. During the 10-year period that he worked in this medium, Picasso revolutionized the way linocuts were made and created some of his most innovative and visually-pleasing works. “Le Danseur” is an image of the head of an actor designed with shapes and lines that would not traditionally define a face. He asks us to look carefully and discover the contours through a new pictorial language. The results are fascinating! This piece is one of only four proofs Picasso pulled in experimental tones prior to the final version. It gives us some insight into the mind of this artistic genius. This type of work is rarely seen outside of a museum setting. It is a must-see!

The Museum of Modern Art, New York,”Chagall: Prints, Monotypes, Illustrated Books” November 22, 1979 - January 28, 1980
This stunning monotype, a unique work of art from 1966, was painted during a period of great creative inspiration for Chagall. After a trial in 1961, Chagall became passionate about creating monotypes, achieving some of his best results between 1962 and 1975.

This image is a complex montage of symbols from his personal life and religious iconography, complimented by an extraordinary palette of colors. There are references to “mother and child”, which had sentimental and religious meaning to Chagall; animals, which appeared in many of his works as a reminder of his village in Vitebsk; and a crucifix, which symbolized the plight of the Jewish people. His signature use of color, floating independently of the lines, is masterful. For Chagall lovers, this will be a tantalizing piece of art to contemplate and admire.

 





Salvador Dali 1904-1989

This highly-developed drawing was created on the title pages of Dali’s book, 50 Secrets of Magic Craftsmanship, in which he presents 50 secrets for mastering the art of painting. Published in 1948, Dalí expounds upon other artists and the history of painting in a blend of outrageous egotism and unconventional humor. The drawing, created a year after the book was published, is clearly a self-portrait, complete with Dali’s signature mustache. It also references Don Quixote as a warrior holding a lance and shield. He defines the figure with tight, circular lines, a method he adopted from Raphael’s figure drawings. The warrior stands in the middle of a Surrealistic landscape, his long shadow serving as a metaphor for mortality. Dalí's work explored his own dream life, hallucinations and fetishes in the process of objectifying the irrational elements of the unconscious. This drawing is steeped in the symbolism and metaphors that made Dali’s work so intriguing.

In 1954, Miró received the Grand Prize for Graphic Work at the Venice Biennale. From 1954 to 1958, he worked almost exclusively in printmaking and ceramics, returning to painting the following year. Les Forestiers (1958) was created during this period of deep concentration for Miró, which is reflected in the quality of the image and mastery of the technique. This etching has the whimsical mystery of imagined figures and faces juxtaposed with celestial symbols, which he often included in his work. The poetry of the lines and colors makes you feel that you are seeing something for the first time, even when the subject, a forester, is not enigmatic. That is the magic of Miró. This particular piece is unique because it is annotated “Bon à tirer” (good to pull). That means it is the final trial proof, approved by the artist, indicating to the printer that this is the “rosetta stone” for the edition. Miró has an extremely high standard, making the BAT a coveted work of art.
