From the Principal

Thank you to all our families for making the effort to participate in the student led conferences this week. As a staff we were aiming to get as close to 100% attendance as possible. If you were unable to attend this week I would encourage you to touch base with your child's teacher to make an appointment that mutually suits.

Huge congratulations to Louie Coburn for coming first in the New Zealand junior men's luge (see below in the newsletter). Champion! I know how proud Louie was (and should be) of his efforts when he was showing me his medals and telling me how his trip went down south. Well done Flynn White - superb effort with your chicken in gaining a national championship (please see below in the newsletter).  Also a huge congratulations to Olivia Watson who has been selected to participate in the special choir which is part of the Christchurch Schools Music Festival.  She will perform for four nights in October at the Christchurch Town hall and our school choir will join her for one evening.  What am impressive achievement from one of our West Eyreton Learners.

Well done to all our awesome West Eyreton students whom participated in the North Canterbury Cantamaths competition. Superb effort!

Our school is involved in a PB4L (positive behaviour for learning) contract. (Ministry of Education endorsed) Sarah Wardle and I attend a course/meeting twice a term. PB4L is simply a way of doing things. 'PB4L School-Wide looks at behaviour and learning from a whole-of-school as well as an individual child perspective. The framework is based on international evidence' (PB4L TKI 2019). . At West Eyreton School, staff have worked with students in the last few months on bus expectations (only four). We have recently looked at assembly expectations (again only 4) to keep it simple for all our students to understand - please see below our assembly expectations.

Staff and students are well under way in getting ready for our whole school production at the end of the term. No doubt you may have heard your child(ren) talk about this. If you would like to help with this in any way please touch base with your child's teacher. I've personally had the pleasure of going around the classrooms and seeing the early stages of how this is coming together. In a few cases I have had the opportunity to offer (in my opinion) very "average" acting/dancing advice! Whether students take this on or not could be another story...

Tomorrow you may see staff (both at West Eyreton School and through the media) wearing green in support of our Principal's (in relation to the collective bargaining with the MoE). If you would like to know more please touch base with me (or one of our teachers).

Have an awesome weekend!

Ngā mihi nui,
Hayden van Lent

Welcome to Alexia Wilkies (Yr 7) who has joined the Rōpū Karearea room this week. We hope you enjoy your time at West Eyreton School.
Enterprise Challenges
Congratulations to Phoebe Minchin who is receiving her Bronze badge.

On THURSDAY 26th SEPTEMBER we have entered into a Year 7 and 8 sports tournament with Swannanoa School.  All Year 7 and 8 students will be attending/supporting this event and will be attending the after-match/shared lunch.

Those students who will be playing a sport will play either rugby (7aside), football (9aside), netball or hockey (6aside).

The bus cost to this event will be $5/child.  This amount needs to be internet banked by Wednesday 14th August.

There will be an 'after-match' function for all students, so it would be appreciated if all students bought 1 plate of food to this tournament.  This will give all Year 7 and 8 students the opportunity to mix together and make new friends before starting high school.

If you have any questions or queries please email

Thank you!

On Wednesday 7th of August we competed in the North Canterbury Canta Math competition.  In groups of 4 we had a year 6, 7 and 8 team. The children had to answer 20 questions in half an hour. After each question was answered a runner from each team raced to the front to check if their answer was correct and if not they could take it back for another try or make the decision to pass on that question.  If it was correct they received the next question. Our most successful team was our year 7's.  They scored 70/100 possible points.
School Photos
Next Tuesday 13th August is photo day. Siblings, classroom and group photos will be taken. We will begin with families with pre school aged children from 8:30am.
As soon as confirmation of further times for these photo sessions are confirmed we will get in touch with families.
All pupils are to wear the full school uniform on the day (no holes in garments) and dressed in a neat and tidy appearance. No coloured or logo style sweatshirts are to be worn.
A pamphlet outlining the online procedure for ordering and viewing your child's photos was sent home last Thursday.
If you would like to have sibling photographs taken please ring or email the school office to have a form sent home. Once you have filled in all the details please send back to the school office.
World Vision 40 hr Famine
A representative from World Vision will be visiting the school on Wednesday 28th August (full assembly) to speak to the whole school about what money was raised and where the funds will be targeted. She will speak about the work World Vision is undertaking and stories of those children and families in Southern Sudan.
We will be presenting all pupils who participated in this weekend with certificates etc.
Last weekend Louie competed in a luge competition.
Luge is a winter sport featured at the Winter Olympic Games where a competitor or two-person team rides a flat sled while lying supine (face up) and feet first. The sport is usually contested on a specially designed ice track that allows gravity to increase the sled's speed. The winner normally completes the route with the fastest overall time.
Louie came 1st in the junior men (15yrs and below) and should be proud of his efforts.
Keep up the good work Louie! 🛷

On 3rd June, Flynn White went to Nelson to compete in the ‘National Bird Show’. Flynn currently looks after 80 birds at home.  He has also been featured in the ‘Northern Outlook’ talking about his birds.
The National Bird Show,  is the biggest show of the year for chicken fanciers.  There are approximately 2,000 exhibitors which come from all over New Zealand.
There are many classes in which you can compete in.  Flynn competed in the ‘modern’ games. This meant his chicken had to have good posture, no missing feathers and have nice features.
Flynn’s chicken had to be judged over a whole day.  He is extremely proud of the chicken that he displayed as Flynn gained a ‘National Championship’ for his chicken.
Welll done Flynn

Dental Van Visit
The van will be at our school on Wednesday 14th August.
If you have any concerns regarding your child/children's teeth,  this would be the ideal opportunity to visit the school and have a chat to one of the dental therapists.
Library News
The school librarians would like to add some jigsaws and board games to the library for use during the breaks. We would appreciate any good quality, age appropriate puzzles or games that you could donate for this purpose. Ideal examples include Junior Scrabble, Chinese Checkers, Chess and Snakes and Ladders.

Many thanks
