Hi there! The Spark! is an effort committed to streamling campus communication regarding the environment, wellness, equity, and social justice. In these newsletters, expect to find information, events, and activities from clubs on campus and in the Salem community.

Holiday Events

Enjoy these opportunities to get involved in the holiday spirit in the Salem community!

22nd Annual Riverfront Park Holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony

Join the Salem community on Friday, November 30th as Salem celebrates the 22ndAnnual Riverfront Park Holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony! This event is free and festivities begin at 6 p.m. Mayor Chuck Bennett will lead the ceremony at 6:30 pm.

Star Tree Lighting and Holiday Celebration

Join Willamette as the Star Trees are lit at 7 pm. The celebration includes music, s'mores, cocoa and cookies. Begin your evening with a special dinner in Goudy Commons, continue with the Star Tree lighting and end with a holiday concert in Smith Auditorium. 

Salem Saturday Market: Holiday Market

Visit the Oregon State Fairgrounds to attend Salem's Holiday Market on December 10th and 11th. More than 250 artisans will sell handmade and homegrown products. The market will also have holiday contests, children’s activities, entertainment and door prizes.

Holidays at the Capitol

From November 29 to December 21 the 37th annual Holidays at the Capitol program will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Saturday. The capitol building is open for holiday lights, the ever-popular train, and décor.

Social Equity

The social equity section is dedicated to promoting events, workshops, and opportunities for student activism and involvement concerning issues of equity and justice that are prevalent in the Willamette community.

Letters From Home

Join us in the Lee Pelton Theatre on Friday, November 30th and Saturday, December 1st at 7:30 pm to hear writer and actor Kalean Ung speak about an intimate, stunning journey of her family, beginning in Cambodia during the 1970s Khmer Rouge era including how their struggle and escape lead her into yet another world of conflict – growing up bi-racial and first generation in Southern California.This remarkable event is completed with original music by her father, Chinary Ung. Tickets are required.

This section of The Spark! focuses on accessibility to wellness and the general well-being of individuals in our community. This section is composed of everyday tips and information aimed at increasing mental and physical wellness in the Willamette and Salem community.

De-Stress For Finals Season

With finals season fast approaching, there is plenty of stress building up within students. Stress not only inhibits our productivity and full potential, but more importantly our health. Here are some ways to de-stress from studying or general practices of well deserved self care.

  • Journaling: Writing down your thoughts and feelings can be a great way to declutter your mind. You can write about anything that helps you reflect: what you're grateful for, your feelings, or something that is stressing you out.
  • Physical Activity: Getting up and moving around doesn't always mean a brutal workout routine. You can go for a walk, stretch, dance, or anything else that has you get up and move around. Getting blood flowing through your body will help you feel less stiff and increase your alertness. Pro-tip: try to do some of these outdoors to get fresh air!
  • Cleaning/Decluttering: Often times, our surroundings can really impact our mental state. Try to organize things around your room or clean things to make you feel like there's less going on. Doing repetitive motions like vacuuming, doing dishes, or folding laundry can help us deal with feelings of anxiousness.

Easy Recipes for the Busy Student: Brain Foods

Take some study breaks with these snacks that are considered "brain foods" for the properties that come from their fats, proteins, etc.

  • Blueberries
  • Pumpkin seeds
  • Dark chocolate
  • Walnuts
  • Boiled eggs
  • Bananas*
*Bananas aren't a brain food, but their potassium helps regulate blood pressure which in turn can aid in de-stressing and focus.

Willamette Dance Company Fall Showcase

Come support the entirely student led, choreographed, danced, and produced showcase! Styles of dance range from lyrical, to hip hop, to swing. Admission is $1 in cash at Smith Auditorium and shows start at 7 pm on November 28th and 29th.


The Sustainability section focuses on the environment to promote connection with environmental efforts, outdoor access, and environmental advocacy!

Nature Walks

Join professor David Craig on nature walks on Tuesdays from 8-9 am and Fridays 3-4 pm.

The Soar Center

The SOAR Center is a space on campus where students have access to the Bearcat Pantry, First Generation Book Drive, and a Clothing Share. The SOAR Center is located in Shephard Hall and is open to all students Monday-Friday 9am-5pm. All resources are free with no questions asked.
Swipe Out Hunger
From November 14th-28th, students can log into your Bearcat BnB account to either request a meal voucher or donate your extra meal points!

Community Service
The Community Service section is a place for students to find opportunities to make a difference in the surrounding community, Willamette and beyond.
