Janusz Korczak Association of the USA
June 9, 2020
Dear Korczakians,

As I sit and write this message to you, I hear the steps of thousands of people demonstrating in various parts of the US and I hear the feet of those who are running away after looting or away from the police. In the middle of already tense lives during COVID-19, we hear the cries—Black Lives Matter. I am reminded of Dr. Korczak, in Wajda’s movie, running on empty streets of Warsaw full of glass and debris during one of the bombings with the child in his arms. Somebody shouted at him, “Dr. Korczak why aren’t you hiding?” and his answer was, “No shoes!” He did not care about the danger, he was doing the only thing that was right—to protect from danger another human being no matter how small, no matter what religion or ethnic origin. Black Lives Matter. Nobody is above the law and has a right to take another human life.
We who follow the wise teachings of Dr. Korczak work on promoting justice in education by working with children who are not given what they deserve at home, in school, in society. I ask you to join us, to do the same at this critical time in our history. Find an organization that works with children or youth and help secure for them a better life, a better education, a better community. Show them that you care, one person at a time.
Black Lives Matter.
We wish you all peace and good health,
Mariola Strahlberg
