Spring is here!

We couldn't be happier to see the arrival of longer daylight, warmer temperatures, a little more sunshine and especially the emergence of daffodils and cherry blossoms! Did anyone else feel like the winter was dragging on forever? (Maybe it was only those of us with kids trapped indoors when it was too rainy or windy to play outside??) Thankfully, the first day of spring is just a few weeks away!

Below is a list of a few special dates happening this month which we feel are important to recognize in our quest to educate our customers on living a more environmentally aware lifestyle. Click on each link to read more about that day:

March 3 - World Wildlife Day

March 8 - International Women's Day

March 20 - Spring Equinox/ First Day of Spring
(coincidentally, also International day of Happiness!)

March 21: International Forest Day

March 22: World Water Day

March 27: Earth Hour

Just in case you missed it....

YES, WE ARE FILLING PERSONAL BOTTLES AND CONTAINERS FOR IN-STORE SHOPPING!  In fact we have been since the beginning of June but for some reason more than a few people didn't know. We've tried our best to tell everyone!

Please note, Vancouver Island Health Authority mandates that all customers' personal bottles or containers be completely EMPTY, CLEAN and DRY.

We are a full service shop our staff do all the filling for you, as such, we are the ones handling containers and putting ourselves at risk. Please leave the lids on your bottles and place them on the metal tray so that we can spray them down with an alcohol based disinfectant before and after handling them. We regret that this spray may cause unavoidable damage to existing ink or labels on your bottles.

For a full list of products available in the shop to fill by weight into your own bottles or containers please click HERE.
Small Business BC Awards!

We've been nominated in two categories for an award with Small Business BC!

The categories are “Best Community Impact” and “Premier’s People’s Choice”. It would mean the absolute world to us if you could take a moment to follow the link and vote for us (you can vote for both categories!) then share this post with your friends and encourage them to vote for us as well!
It’s been a difficult time for small independent businesses with the current global pandemic. We are certainly just one of the many many feeling the decline in friendly faces visiting our shop as well as experiencing disruptions in the supply chain. However, we are not discouraged! We are continuing to do very our best to promote reusable over single use.

This award is just one more way we can drive awareness of how everyone can make simple changes, like refilling the same dish soap bottle over and over, to reduce waste and cut carbon.

We appreciate all of your ongoing support and determination to continue to shop sustainably!

Please vote for us and share this post to encourage others to vote too!

Sustainable Spring Cleaning Tips
  • Start by decluttering! Sort, put away and purge before you start wiping surfaces.
  • Open your doors and windows on a warm day to let fresh air in and odours and off gassing from paints, chemicals and synthetics out.
  • Clean from the top to the bottom so that any dust or dirt that falls doesn't land on surfaces you have already cleaned.
  • Dust first, then vacuum or sweep, mop last.
  • Use a soft damp cloth to gently wipe the dust from leaves of house plants.
  • Refresh your dishwasher by placing a cup of white vinegar upright in the top rack when you run the next cycle. This breaks down hard water stains and deodorizes, while killing bacteria.
  • Use baking soda to polish kitchen sinks, stove tops and bathtubs.
  • Sprinkle baking soda on mattresses and carpets to help deodorize and absorb oils and dirt. Allow it to sit for an hour or more, then vacuum up.
  • Keep your natural bristle dish brushes or scrub brushes lasting longer. Make sure you shake out excess water, quickly reshape bristles so they do not dry in bent positions, and hang the brush with the bristles down. This prevents swelling and mildew in the wood handle.
  • Choose eco-friendly, plant based cleaning products in refillable containers.
Did you know our favourite brand of reusable beeswax wraps was invented and is still manufactured right here in Victoria? While Abeego's main purpose is to Keep Food Alive, by allowing food to breath and preventing it from drying out, these reusable beeswax food wraps comes in handy for a variety of other tasks as well..

1. Use Abeego as an anti-slip mat under your cutting board or recipe-displaying tablet.

2. Tight lid that won't budge? Reach for your Abeego to add some extra grip.

3. Can't find your funnnel? Fold Abeego around itself and funnel edible liquids or powders.

4. Lay a large or giant size Abeego flat on the counter as a surface for rolling out pastry dough. Instead of lifting the pasty and potentially tearing it, lift the entire Abeego to transport your pastry to its pie shell.
