In the last several years Robert Smith has appeared more publicly on the scene as an amazing African American billionaire; wealthier by far than Oprah who had held the number 1 position as America’s wealthiest and most enduring billionaire for forever, or so it seemed.
Robert Smith’s business - Vista Equity Partners - focuses on enterprise software, and has been right in the center of the on-going tech boom, and has continued to be poised for even more amazing growth and success.
Among many other high profile achievements, Smith became board chair of Carnegie Hall in 2016; donated $20 million to the African American museum in Washington, DC; and in 2019 gave a dazzling $40 million gift to Morehouse College to make it debt-free for that year's entire graduating class. In all of this and much more, Smith’s star has been steadily ascending, and he’s been a leader to admire.
More recently though, Smith's shadow side has started to emerge as well. He's been involved in a huge tax evasion scandal with the threat of criminal charges and severe consequences that Smith has been able to wiggle out of by helping the DOJ to make it’s case against his erstwhile mentor. Where that case will end up is unclear at the moment, but for now Smith seems to be out of danger, and can continue to rebuild his image, perhaps ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_F._Smith_(investor)).
