This month we feature in The Practical Key, Elon Musk. It seems like an understatement to say that Elon Musk is a dazzling genius. From PayPal, to Tesla, to SpaceX, to mention only his most high profile and visible enterprises, Musk excels and captures our imaginations unlike almost any other leader.
At the same time, Musk seems to be an outlier in other not so complimentary ways when it comes to being the CEO of publicly traded companies: openly smoking pot on a widely distributed podcast; getting into a protracted spat with someone trying to rescue trapped boys a world away in a Thai cave; and more recently being perceived as a reckless manipulator of cryptocurrency.
Every time I hear one of these seemingly outlandish stories about Musk, I ask my "Why won't he just stay on the straight and narrow path and let us admire him without qualification?" For some, the obvious response might be that his bad boy persona is where his genius also resides, and that you can't have one without the other, or some variation on that theme. Maybe. However, it makes me think that he may be disturbed in certain ways that I hope don't get worse with time.
