In this new school year of 2022-2023, we are reaching twice as many urban students than we were able to mentor last school year. Last year we mentored 150 students. This year we are mentoring over 300, and we are working to expand to a school in Watts which will increase this number to 340.
Our board chairman, Gipson Lyles, recently said to me, "Look at all the young people we have blessed over the years, and there are many more we will bless." We are not stopping or slowing down even though this is our 21st year. We have mentored over 2,500 students since our inception. We look forward to the thousands more that we will lift to higher levels through our mentoring programs.
Thousands more urban youth are and will be mentored through our partners in other urban communities from the West Coast to the East Coast. We are sending mentoring sessions to coaches in Memphis, Washington DC, Georgia and Michigan to use to have mentoring conversations with their urban athletes. In addition, over 130 coaches (through our connections with them on LinkedIn) are receiving our mentoring sessions to have mentoring conversations with their athletes. In the Philadelphia area, Barron Lacy is using our mentoring tool to mentor the youth in Chester. Also, the Blue Heart Foundation in San Diego is utilizing our mentoring tool to mentor underserved Black males.
Indeed, we are not stopping or slowing down, because the need is so great. Our goal is to spark a mentoring movement (through partnerships) that spreads into every urban community in America. Join us in mentoring urban youth in your circle of influence by going to our website (gomentors.org) that has our mentoring conversation material. Browse through the material and click on the session you would like to use. Watch the video (conversation starter), then use the questions to have your transformative conversation with the young people to whom you are connected.
