Behind the Scenes Secret - How to avoid an instant NO in an interview:

As I wrap up my current recruitment projects I am busy conducting lots of interviews.  This week alone I have said an instant NO to almost 50% of candidates because of how they answered one question, "what appeals to you about this opportunity?"

This is essentially the "why do you want to work here?" question, and I hope as loyal readers that you ace that question every time since I gave you two easy steps to answering it!

The candidates I said no to gave really weak, uninformed questions obviously demonstrating that they had not done any research, some hadn't even really looked at the job description!

Is it just me, do I just have too high expectations? Well, I polled my recruitment peers and they said the same thing.  That this the one question that a poor answer can immediately disqualify a candidate from consideration, there is almost no coming back from it.

Why?  On the surface it shows that a candidate isn't interested or prepared for the interview.  Beyond that is shows that they approach important meetings or work projects with a lackadaisical attitude, that they will show up and "wing it'.  Trust me, that is not on a list of desirable attributes!

It takes 5 minutes on the low end to prepare for that question following my two easy steps, a no brainer time investment on your end!
