We've been enjoying our events break. It's nice to recharge our batteries a little, and enjoy the wonderful weather. But we're also eager to get started back up with events, and we have five this month. As always, you can click on the links for these further down in the email, so I won't double-link them up here.
Middle Grade Book Club, July 9, 6 pm: We are very fortunate in that the person who runs this book club is also an author. Local author Rebecca Caprara is amazing. Her debut middle-grade novel, The Magic of Melwick Orchard, was one of my favorite books of 2018, and she has two more books on the way. Middle grade books are designed for anyone 8-12 years old, and we encourage you to come to this book club each month whether you've read the book in question or not. Rebecca also sits and talks with the kids not just about the book in question, but about their own reading and writing. And then they pick next month's book together!
Saturday Morning Story Time with Ioana Hobai, July 20th, 11 am: We welcomed Ioana to the store last year, as the illustrator of Before You Sleep, which we launched right here in the store. That was Ioana's debut as an author. Lena's Slippers, which came out last month, is Ioana's debut as an author! And she's also the illustrator, which is just the coolest thing. The book follows the titular Lena, who loves performing but doesn't have money for new ballet slippers. As the book progresses Lena learns that what you wear isn't the most important thing.
Baseball Event with Jeff Idelson & Jean Fruth, July 23rd, 7 pm: For the past 25 years, Jeff worked at the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y., and for the past 11, he was the Hall's president. Now, he has created the organization Grassroots Baseball, whose mission is to promote and celebrate the amateur game around the globe, with a focus on growing interest and participation at the youngest levels. He's beginning this movement, which will undoubtedly be successful, with a wonderful photo book of the same name, by Jean Fruth. The book contains essays from more than a dozen Hall of Famers, including Wade Boggs, Ichiro Suzuki and Randy Johnson, about the places they grew up playing baseball and why they are important. Both Jeff and Jean will be here to share the book with us, which is a rare treat indeed!
Sci-fi/Fantasy Event with Elizabeth Bear and Cadwell Turnbull, July 24th, 7 pm: Both Elizabeth and Cadwell have had new books come out this year, and we can't wait to hear all about them. Elizabeth is kind of a big deal - in addition to the many books she's had published, she's won the Hugo Award three times, written for The Washington Post and Popular Mechanics, and spoken at The White House. She's had two new books out this year: Ancestral Night and The Red-Stained Wings.
Cadwell is at the very beginning of his author journey. He's had eight short stories published, and his first novel, The Lesson, was published last month. We had been anticipating it for quite some time, as had the literary world -- it's already received three starred reviews. I had a chance to sit with Cadwell at a dinner last year, so the book was on my radar well before there were finished review copies to hand out. When we got our hands on one, our events coordinator Kyra tore through it, and our event planning started! This will be a really fun event!
Saturday Morning Story Time with Scott Magoon, July 27th, 11 am: As you may know, Scott Magoon is one of our absolute favorite people! Scott, who has illustrated dozens of books and authored some of his own as well, came to the store last year, and we're thrilled to welcome him back in support of his new book, Linus The Little Yellow Pencil. The book follows Linus and his eraser Ernie, who don't always see eye to eye. But if they're going to make some truly special art, they're going to have to learn to work together.
