Calling all TV and film lovers,

For those of us Stateside, I hope you had a wonderful Memorial Day weekend!

I had hoped the same for Olivia Wilde, crossing my fingers it would rain cash for her debut film, Booksmart. Unfortunately, the racy teen comedy tanked, pulling in less than $9 million over the long weekend despite an impressive 97% on Rotten Tomatoes. Meanwhile, franchises reigned supreme, with Guy Ritchie’s meh remake of Aladdin taking home $117 million, followed by John Wick 3 ($31 million) and Avengers: Endgame ($22 million).

Still, it’s not too late to nudge that number higher. The all-important opening weekend may be over, but if you’re in the market for a frenetic and gleeful popcorn flick, consider making it an original and female-directed one to boot.

Watch intelligently,

WHAT WE LOVED

Booksmart

Mediaversity Grade: A- 4.50/5

What the film lacks in racial representation, it makes up for tenfold by reflecting how sexually diverse teenagers are today. An “all genders glory hole”? Why not! Read the review→

SEE IT IN THEATERS

WHAT WE LIKED

Ramy

Mediaversity Grade: B- 3.69/5

Ramy captures what it’s like to grow up as an Arab Muslim in America. But don’t take it from me, take it from our writer: an Arab Muslim immigrant who grew up in America. Read the review→

WATCH ON HULU

WHAT WE SIDE-EYED

Game of Thrones - Season 8

Mediaversity Grade: D 2.25/5

Watching Game of Thrones over the last eight years has been a complicated privilege. I finally capture my thoughts on gender, race, disability, and LGBTQ in the storied show. Read the review→

AND I DON'T WANNA MISS A THING

On Hulu, enjoy the awkward nostalgia of PEN15 or the strange mermaid thriller Siren, which centers a polyamorous romance. Interracial couples finally become de rigueur in movies like The Sun Is Also a Star or Tribeca Film Festival’s award-winning Plus One, which also features Maya Erskine of PEN15; unfortunately, neither manages to fully kick Hollywood’s habit of colorism.
