October in Nebraska

Cool mornings, sunny days, starry nights, no bugs, and TONS of local food.

It must be fall in Nebraska.

I've got to take a moment to share my love of orchards and apples with you all. They are the best! Apples are such a special food. To me they represent a beautiful history of horticulture, plants and people. Humans have been tending apple trees, and enjoying their bounty for 4,000 years (or longer!). Hundreds of varieties have been coaxed from the genome of the apple through selection or happy accidents.

Did you know that apples can be stored for a very long time? I remember hearing that depending on the time of year,  apples in a grocery store could be 1 year old! The wonders of Controlled Atmosphere storage. Read more about how apples are stored for long periods of time here :

I've got nothing against those apples that are stored for long periods of time, but wow, the taste and texture of a fresh, locally grown apple is...sublime.  So crunchy, juicy and full of flavor. They feel wholesome to me, and remind me of my childhood. Being out in a orchard (doing the u-pick thing) also evokes a  special feeling. Maybe it's the knowledge that winter will be soon upon us, that makes savoring the sweetness of a day at an orchard so heart-filling? Can you tell I love apples??? :)

Let's celebrate fall by heading out to our local orchards and tasting how good apples can be!

Support Farm to School in NE!

The Mountain Plains Crunch Off is a multi-state celebration of Farm to School Month. States throughout the Mountain Plains Region compete to see which State can get the most “crunches” into a local apple, or other local produce, per capita.
Nebraska was the 2019 and 2020 Crunch Off winner, with more registrations per capita than any other state - let's win again in 2021!

Schools, organizations, farmers, parents, community members and local food enthusiasts can register their team and crunch into a local fruit or veggie at the same time in celebration of local food and farm to school programs.
