2021 Annual Board Meeting in San Francisco

The NOMV team came together, both virtually and in-person, for the two-day annual board meeting in San Francisco! The Nominating Committee elected Board Members and Officers for the 2022-2023 board term, following the best practices for non-profit charities. The elections will go into effect January 1, 2022. The NOMV Board of Directors now has eight members, three of whom are Officers. We would like to thank the NOMV Board of Directors and staff for a productive meeting!

Thank you Dr. Melanie Goble

NOMV extends great appreciation to Dr. Melanie Goble who served as a founding member of the NOMV Board of Directors. Dr. Goble also served the role of NOMV Treasurer (2018-2021). NOMV is grateful to Dr. Goble for her service on the NOMV Board and is thrilled she plans to continue as a volunteer with our organization.

Dr. Goble joined NOMV as a member in 2014, led the NOMV Membership team since 2016, helped create the NOMV Support Grants program in 2017, served on the Executive Committee, was a founding committee member for the NOMV Student Support & Mentorship Committee in 2021, volunteers as a Moderator on the NOMV Facebook peer support forum since 2017, and is one of the NOMV Expert Speakers for the NOMV Education Committee.

Dr. Goble plans to continue supporting the NOMV Facebook teams, serving as a mentor on the Student Support & Mentorship Committee, and continuing as an Expert Speaker. Additionally, Dr. Goble will continue with Renewed Strength Veterinary Services, providing relief services around the USA and hopefully expanding into Canada next year. Dr. Goble shared “There is enough pain in life. We can each help change that with our words and actions daily. My goal is to be a positive influence in the profession and the world. Let us bring more good into the spaces around us, both near and far. Please remember that you are not alone. Together we can and will do great things.”
Welcome New Board Members!

We are thrilled to welcome our newly elected NOMV board members, Erika Lin-Hendel, VMD, PhD, and Taylor Miller, DVM, MS, Professional Counselor Associate.
Taylor Miller, DVM, MS, Professional Counselor Associate in the state of Oregon (pronouns: She/Her/Hers) graduated from the Oregon State College of Veterinary Medicine in 2010 and graduated with her Masters in Mental Health Counseling in 2020.

Her interest in mental health began during vet school and culminated in the pursuit of a counseling degree during her years as an associate veterinarian in the greater Portland area. After nine years exclusively in veterinary medicine, Dr. Miller restructured her time to focus on her personal mission to improve the mental health and wellbeing of veterinary professionals as a counselor and educator.

Her association with NOMV is a natural extension of her personal mission. She serves as a Subcommittee Lead on the NOMV Student Support and Mentorship Committee and is an active Expert Speaker with NOMV’s Education Committee. She is thrilled to be joining the NOMV Board of Directors to help grow the organization to work towards the NOMV mission alongside her personal mission.

Dr. Miller believes strongly that early education in mental health and wellness topics is key to a healthy and sustainable career in the veterinary profession which is where she has put forth effort prior to joining the NOMV Board. She also understands that creative solutions will be required to effect change within the existing systems and is excited for this challenge.
Dr. Erika Lin-Hendel, VMD, PhD (pronouns: They/Them/Theirs) graduated from University of Pennsylvania’s Veterinary Medical Scientist Training Program in 2016. Dr. Lin-Hendel consulted in the swine industry before shifting to small animal medicine to create more space for their advocacy work in mental health and social justice. They currently serve on the board of several organizations including Des Moines Pride Center and Iowa Queer Communities of Color Coalition, are active in PrideVMC's DEI working group where they have co-authored the Gender Identity Bill of Rights for the Veterinary Profession. In addition to serving as Chair of the NOMV Student Support and Mentorship Committee, they are excited to expand their work with NOMV as a new Board Member.

As a person who has been intimately impacted by mental health spaces both personally, with loved ones, and in community spaces, they gravitated towards NOMV as an organization that can create change on multiple levels, including sparking institutional change. The community they have found since being part of NOMV has been an instrumental part of their mental health and well-being practice.

As an autistic BIPOC non-binary veterinarian, Erika is dedicated to advocating for the intentional creation of accessible intersectional spaces centered on and led by marginalized voices in veterinary medicine. They hope to contribute to and facilitate collaborative projects between affinity organizations within the veterinary medical profession.

We are so excited that Brian Bourquin, Carrie Jurney, and Paul Mataras are serving their second term on the Board of Directors! Term length is two years and board members may serve three consecutive terms.

Beginning January 2022, Carrie Jurney begins her second term as NOMV President, Caitlin Furlong continues her first term as NOMV Secretary/Vice President, and Paul Mataras is set to begin his first term as NOMV Treasurer. Our officers are eager to fulfill their duties for NOMV!
Nominating Committee

Thank you to the nominating committee for their service meeting with their fellow Board Members up for re-election, interviewing prospective new board members, reviewing and proposing policy updates for the full NOMV Board to review at the annual meeting, and the countless hours that went into their preparation for the meeting! The committee is comprised of the Board Members that were not up for reelection during this meeting. Thank you to Karla Fernandez, Chris Kughn, and Caitlin Furlong for your service!
