Ski Program and the SHCS Olympic Games

it's all about teamwork

Cross-Country Skiing and Biathalon Training

Students at Soldier Hollow Charter School embrace the out of doors in all seasons.  We have an eight week ski program where students ski for an hour twice a week.

Soldier Hollow Charter School students attend school at the 2002 Olympic and Paralympic venue for cross country skiing and biathlon. As a part of their physical education program, students  ski two days a week, for eight weeks (once for kindergarten). Students are taught the fundamentals of cross country skiing through games, drills, and other fun activities.

Ski Program Volunteers

Soldier Hollow Charter School parents are encouraged to attend ski sessions with our groups at the Soldier Hollow Ski Lodge.

How you can help:

Pre & Post Skiing:

  • Assist with putting on and taking off boots
  • Distribute and return skis or poles
  • Ensure rental area is clean and orderly after skiing

On Snow:

  • Upon arrival, ask an instructor if there is a group that needs extra help (there are some big groups!)
  • Tag along with your group - It is very helpful to have someone being the “sweeper” in the back to help with any kids who need assistance
  • Assist with trips to the restroom or any other needs

Team Soldier Hollow Nordic Devo Team

The Soldier Hollow Devo Team is for youth ages 10-13 who have some ski experience. Skiers will begin to apply and understand basic training principles of cross country skiing.

Visit The Soldier Hollow Nordic Center website for more information.

Thank you!

*Ski Volunteers are always needed. Parents, please sign up with your students' teacher.

THIS WEEK is the first day on skis. The ski equipment is provided by the ski lodge (skis, ski poles, and ski boots). Students have to have a hat, gloves and long sleeves to be able to ski. Sun protection (sunglasses) and waterproof pants are highly recommended. Also, long socks to prevent blisters from ski boots. While some of our students have been skiing (and racing) for years, for others it will be their very first time. Students will be placed in multi-age groups according to their skill level and each group will have a ski instructor as well as a parent volunteer (you). If you would like to volunteer, contact your child’s teacher.

Parent Volunteers for SHCS Skiing

How you can help:

· Help students get skis, boots, and poles, get clothing on and get outside to ski.

· Help put equipment away when students return from skiing.

· Grab equipment yourself and ski with a group. Remember – you may not be able to ski with your child’s group. Volunteers need to be spread out amongst all the groups so please be flexible and go where there is a need (ask coach Mark if you are not sure). Please go with a group who’s level you are comfortable with. Also, remember this is NOT a lesson for you. If you are not comfortable on skis, there are other ways you can help in the ski lodge.

· While skiing, help students who might have fallen and keep an eye on the back of the group. You may also be asked to take a student(s) back to the lodge for bathroom breaks or potential behavior issues.

· Sign the SoHo waiver before you ski (the link is the as you signed it for your child).

Perks:

· Each time you come to help you can get one “punch” on your volunteer card (please ask an instructor at the desk after each session; make sure you write your name on the card). After two punches, you will have earned a free day of skiing for yourself. You can come back at any time and present your card for a free trail pass and rentals.

Girls On The Run
Be on the look out for more information!
At Girls on the Run we inspire girls to recognize their inner strength and celebrate what makes them one of a kind. Trained coaches lead small teams through our research-based curricula which includes dynamic discussions, activities and running games. Over the course of the ten-week program, girls in 3rd-8th grade develop essential skills to help them navigate their worlds and establish a lifetime appreciation for health and fitness. The program culminates with girls positively impacting their communities through a service project and being physically and emotionally prepared to complete a celebratory 5K event.
