WEEK 2

'Naming your business'

Hey <<Full Name>>,

Welcome to week 2 of LEN's 8 week summer programme 'getting your business online'.
Let us help you answer Rihannas big question, by providing you with a simple 6 step formula for finding your business name.

NAMING YOUR BUSINESS IN 6 SIMPLE STEPS!

STEP 1: Ideation

Ideation is a process to help you generate ideas through a series of exercises which help you to develop name options. Below are a few of many ideation techniques for you to try.

Mind Mapping

Mind-mapping/spider diagrams are great idea generation techniques as they allow for visualisation of your ideas.
Write down all the ideas that come to mind, you can then connect ideas together by curves or lines to create a web of relationships, forcing your brain to connect and find the GREAT name you are looking for.

Word Association

Word association or other words for... are a great way to form potential business names. Start by finding a word that relates to your business idea. Then use tools like a thesaurus, to find out other words that mean the same thing.
You can also use answer the public a visual keyword research tool to find out what people have searched relating to any words you like the sound of.  And a tool which helps you generate names using themes.

If you find a word or set of words you like but it’s not quite right acronyms, abbreviations, mash-ups, inventive spelling, intentional grammar mistakes, removing letters are all other great ways to find a business name.
Found a name you like - Move to Step 2 :)
Not found a name - Back to Step 1 - more ideation required :(

Don't worry you'll find a name that's right for you.

STEP 2: Testing

Once you have found a name you like, you need to check that other people, like, understand and can say your company name.

How to test your name

Surveys /Interviews /Questionnaires
Getting feedback is a vital part of running a business. You must test your concept and with this you must test that your name resonates with your customer. You can do this by sending out surveys, asking your customers to say the name aloud and asking them to spell the name too.
Get yourself a catchy name!! and be sure that your name is not one of the following:

  • HARD TO SPELL - remember people will search for your name online, they need to know what to search.
  • LIMITING AS YOUR BUSINESS GROWS - don't limit your business name to one product or a specific location, you could move and you will expand.
Your name has passed testing - Move to step 3 :)
Your name has not passed testing - Move back to step 1 :(

Don't worry you'll find a name that's right for you.

STEP 3: Domain Name Check

Great news, you like your name, your customers like your name, now let's see if the domain you would like is available. Domain names are used to identify one or more IP addresses, which simply means your website address.  Of course, you want your website to be easily accessible, so you want your domain name to be simple and memorable as possible.
There are many domain suppliers out there so make sure you do your shopping around to find the best deals once you know which domain name you are looking for. Examples include 1&1, go daddy, 123-reg and names.co.uk.
DO NOT purchase your domain at this step, make sure you get all the way through to step 6 before you get your wallet out.

Make sure that you look for a deal which includes free company email addresses within the package. So that you get a email adress which has your company name after the @yourname.co.uk

Your domain is not available - Move back to step 1 :(

Don't worry you'll find a name that's right for you.

STEP 4: Companies House Check

Now you know that the domain is available, you need to check that another company is not already trading under this name. A simple step: put your name into the Company Name Availability tool from Companies house.

STEP 5: Trademark Check

A trademark is a type of intellectual property, it recognises that a name (and other things such as logos colours etc.) is legally registered or established by use as representing a company or product. Owning the trademark for your name will help restrict others from copying your company name.
Use the intellectual property office's trademark search tool to find out if your proposed name is being used elsewhere.

STEP 6: Online Check

It's the final step, you are nearly there, you are one step away from naming your business!!
The last thing to do is do a name search online.
You can use a search engine like namecheckr to check domains & social media usernames/handles across multiple social media platforms. Of course, you can check each platform you think you might use individually too, examples include Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram.
