Significant Incidents

Here are the details of a  couple of incidents reported by the Virginia-Highland Security Patrol (VHSP).

Commercial Burglary 865 N. Highland Av
On Saturday, May 30, police responded to an alarm call at 865 N. Highland Ave NE (CVS Pharmacy). Upon arrival, officers discovered the front glass doors shattered out.  Police entered and cleared the building at 7:20 AM and discovered the interior pharmacy door pried open and the rear door open.  The pharmacy appeared to have been rummaged through.  Police secured the back door and contacted the store operators who were already aware and en route.
Attempted Residential Burglary 700-Block Frederica St NE (ARREST MADE)
On June 16, shortly after midnight multiple officers responded to a prowler call on the 700 block of Frederica St.  A second call was reported in the same location advising a person may have been shot, laying under a silver Nissan Altima.  Two officers located the suspect under the vehicle (who had not been shot) while two officers spoke to the victim who called about the prowler.
The victim had recently arrived at home and was sitting on his couch talking to his girlfriend, when he observed a shadow outside the window going up the steps to his door.  The victim immediately observed the door handle on the front door moving, as the person outside attempted to break in.  The victim approached the door and told the male suspect to leave.  The suspect still attempted to take a bicycle that was left on the porch as he was walking away.
The victim was armed with his gun and warned the suspect that he had a gun, yelling “gun, gun, gun” and shot a round into the air to scare the suspect, at which point the suspect took off running and fell down multiple steps.  The victim grabbed his bicycle and ran back into the house to call 911.  The victim’s 9-year-old daughter was also inside the house.  Police spoke to neighbors who heard the shouting and gunshot and saw the suspect laying under the vehicle where he was discovered by police.  The victim positively identified the suspect as the person who attempted to break into his home.  The suspect was subsequently identified as Kavan Whiteside, and he was found in possession of a package belonging to another possible victim.  Mr. Whiteside had an outstanding warrant out of the City of Atlanta for larceny.  He was placed into custody and charged with CRIMINAL ATTEMPT TO COMMIT BURGLARY OCGA 16-4-1 and transported to Grady Hospital due to some ankle pain complaints.

Note from VHSP: Though we don't know of anyone who was injured in this incident, please don't shoot into the air or in any direction when you don't know where the round might end up. There are documented incidents of people who have been injured and even killed by falling bullets - sometimes from a gun that was fired a mile or more away.

Return of an Old Scam

Once again there is a scam going around where you will receive an email message that appears to come from someone you know or who you have received email from in the past. The message just says that they need a favor and asks you to email back.

However, if you reply, the message goes to a different person/email address. You will then receive an email asking you to purchase some gift cards to help someone (typically a child, niece, nephew, etc.). They indicate that they are out of town and need your help, but will pay you back when they return.

Obviously there is nothing legit about this. Do not respond to any such email. Also, if any email looks suspicious, always look at the header information to check the From: and Reply-to: addresses. If they are off, do not respond or click on any links in the message.

Upcoming Elections

Please don't forget that there are still primary run-off elections coming up on August 11th.

Important contests for public safety include District Attorney and Sheriff. These run-offs are for the Democratic party candidate, so be sure to request a Democratic ballot. There are no Republican candidate run-offs for us.

Early voting begins July 20 and runs through August 7 (Mon-Fri) and will be held on Saturday July 25 & August 1st 8:30 am - 6:00 pm. According to Fulton County Voting and Elections Website, early voting will be available at the Ponce Library branch 980 Ponce De Leon Avenue. However, to date it is not clear whether day of election voting for precincts who were assigned there in the past will take place there or at Butler Street Baptist. Check your Georgia My Voter Page if you intend to vote in person on election day to see if the location has changed.

If you prefer to vote absentee, you need to get your ballot application in soon. Download and Absentee Ballot Application.

Quick Notes

Stolen Bikes - We continue to hear reports of bikes stolen off porches, balconies, from car ports & garages. Even when locked, if the bicycle is in plain sight, there is a risk that it will be taken. As much as none of us want a bicycle in the middle of our living room, the best way to thwart thieves is to lock it up inside.

Enhancements coming for Atlanta Citizen's Review Board (ACRB) - Atlanta City Council has approved increased funding, and the addition of two new members from youth-serving organizations. In addition, the authority of the board has been expanded to require investigations of several types of interactions involving the use of firearms, tasers and in which serious bodily injury or death has occurred, regardless of whether a complaint has been filed.
