Happy 2018!

We hope that you and your staff have had a great start to the New Year!  We sure have!  The SSIA's Executive Team and EC members have hit the ground running in preparation for next month's conference to the Hard Rock Hotel Vallarta.  Thank you to everyone who has registered for the conference, booked their rooms, signed up for seminars and airport shuttles, and voted for the Social Star Awards.  We cannot wait to see you all in just a few short weeks!

In this month's newsletter, we'll provide last-minute conference details, highlight one of our sponsors AND Krissy's visit to a few of the Florida clubs, remind you about tomorrow's National Quarterly Call and our upcoming Lunch N' Learn series, and welcome not one...not two...but THREE new clubs and a Platinum Sponsor to the SSIA.

If you have any questions or comments, or would like to be considered for next month's Member Highlight, please contact Krissy at

Last-Minute Conference Reminders

There's still time to join us February 20th-23rd for the 2018 SSIA Conference to the Hard Rock Vallarta in Mexico!

Click HERE to:

  • Register for the conference
  • Book your room
  • Secure your shuttle from the airport to the hotel
  • Select your conference seminars - Please note that some seminars teacher require information from their attendees, so sign up early!
The hotel has kindly extended our booking window through the end of the week or until our block is full.  There were only 4 rooms left when they emailed us earlier today, so hop on it ASAP!

Don't forget that each room booked receives resort credits that can be used for golf, spa services, meal upgrades and excursions.  If you plan to stay Friday night after the conference, think about using your credits towards a sunset cruise!  We need a minimum of 30 people to arrange a private cruise for our group.  Email Krissy at if interested.

The SSIA is arranging LIMITED round trip ground transportation to the Hard Rock Vallarta (about a 20 minute ride). Choose your arrival and departure times and we will be in touch with the ability to provide transportation. We can only provide transportation for the more popular arrival and departure days. DEADLINE FOR THIS INFO IS FEB 2!  Click HERE to enter your travel information.
Introducing A New Industry Member Benefit
The Executive Team and Chris Wessely, owner of Great Lakes Sport & Social Club and our Partner/Sponsor Chair, are excited to introduce the SSIA's Lunch & Learn series!

Starting in February, we will begin hosting bi-monthly video chats with our Partners and Platinum Sponsors to keep Industry Members informed about how they can best utilize the SSIA's partner programs.  This series also helps us to provide more value to our Partners and Sponsors, allowing them the opportunity to reach Industry Members who want to learn more about their products and services.

Becky Groffman with Gravity Payments will host our first Lunch & Learn from 12:30-1pm EST on Tuesday, February 13th.  Credit card processing can be confusing and time-consuming, so she will help walk us through the ins and outs of it.  An event with call-in information will be created and shared in the private Facebook group page, and the link to the event will also be shared on the Slack channel.  We hope you can make it to this flagship initiative!
Member Highlights
Thank you to South Florida Club Sport and JaxSport for hanging out with Krissy during her drive back home from Miami last week!

On Monday, January 15th, she stopped by South Florida Club Sport HQ in Hollywood, Florida to say hi and enjoy some doughnuts and bagels with Steve, Bobby and Adrian.

Steve was posting photos from the previous day's Hotel Gaythering Sports League, hosted on Miami Beach on Sundays at the Gaythering, a hotel, bar and sauna that caters to the gay community.  Steve started working with the group a year-and-a-half ago when they couldn't get permitting to finish their end-of-season games.  Since SFCS held the permits for the park they wanted to use and the owner was busy running the other aspects of the business, Steve offered to manage this private league for the Gaythering, and the rest is history!

SFCS has now organized three kickball leagues, three beach volleyball leagues and a flag football league for the Hotel Gaythering Sports League, which has become SFCS's highest revenue generator.  They are raking in $10-$12k per season, and are simply running the leagues!  The Gaythering handles the marketing, sponsorships and post-game activities.

Steve really enjoys working with the group because they put fun first and use the leagues as a true social activity.  For example, the current volleyball league has 220 players registered on 15 teams.  Although Steve recommends 12-15 player for the 6x6 format, some teams have as many as 26 players on them because they want a great excuse to hang out, meet people and have a fun day on their Sundays!  The Gaythering even hosts a post-game BBQ each week.

When asked about tips to best work with the LGBTQ community, Steve recommends:
  • Be inclusive - the league is open to anyone of any gender or sexual orientation
  • Cater to their requests - he provides the owner with different shirt options each season and switches up the sports per the owner's request
  • Ask sponsors about any special budgets for the LGBTQ community
  • Get involved in LGBTQ community organizations, such as the Miami-Dade Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce
On Tuesday, January 16th, Krissy stopped by Jacksonville to have breakfast with one of the SSIA's newer members, Trevor Hall of JaxSport.  They had a great time eating omelettes, talking shop and comparing stories about crazy fun times spent with Ian Elston of Tampa Bay Club Sport (Trevor and Ian go way back and have played in soccer tournaments together for many years).

Trevor was also nice enough to share some JaxSport swag!  Be sure to say hi to him at the conference...he's a good one to know!
Sponsor Highlight: Tee Shirts & Champ Swag
Ace Apparel owner, Marc Mathios, will be attending the SSIA Conference in Mexico this year.  He works with a number of SSIA members already and looks forward to meeting more at the Conference.
