NEWS: Record Snowfall, Spring and Bears....

Record Snowfall in Montana!

According to our local newspaper, the Missoulian, we here in western Montana endured about a month of record snowfall! For outdoor enthusiasts and those who just generally enjoy the beautiful winter scenery snow provides, this was a remarkable winter, stretching into the first week of March... Now, however, with warming temperatures, much of the snow on the valley floors is starting to melt, leaving paved trails and roads bare enough to enjoy some of our favorite outdoor "spring" activities--bicycling, running, walking and more!

A Grizzly Awakening...
Besides the unveiling of grass beneath layers of white, that's not all that emerges from the spring thaw (note: we aren't going to talking about potholes)--our beloved bear populations are starting to come out of hibernation. There have been reports from different 'corners' of the state, from Yellowstone to Whitefish .  With that in mind, if you are planning to come to Montana to recreate in our great outdoors, any time from now until late fall, consider indulging in a little bear education, either by researching online, participating in a local seminar, or the old fashioned way--reading books (here are a few to get you started: Bear Aware..., Backcountry Bear Basics; or for some grizzly nonfiction stories, my favorite: Mark of the Grizzly).

Safety first.  Whether the topic is travel through Montana during this inconsistent weather time of year (aka "spring", often going back and forth between warm spring days to snowy, wintery travel), or recreating in the nearby woods or far out wilderness, the advice is always the same, in Montana: plan ahead, "know before you go", and be prepared!
