February 2019
Everyone is Improving and More People are Coming to Play

We have been watching players in all of the sessions lately and noticed that there seems to be such an improvement in play. Players are able to sustain play longer and are becoming more creative in their play…or is it just luck? At any rate, games are entertaining to watch and everyone seems to be enjoying themselves.

The complimentary lesson is bringing six new players a week into the sport. Not all of them return, but we are certainly seeing growth in our numbers at the different sessions. Thank you to everyone for welcoming these new players, explaining the rules, and being friendly. Most of us know how intimidating it can be to come in to a venue that you are unfamiliar with or where you don't know anyone.

New Schedule Starting in February

There will be some changes to our scheduling starting in February. We hope to tweak the Saturday sessions to accommodate these changes. The new Saturday session times will be as follows:

9-10:45AM: intermediate and advanced players
10:45-11:45AM: beginners along with skill development for advanced beginners and intermediates (see below for more detailed explanation)
11:45AM-1:30PM: advanced beginners and intermediate

Skill Development Sessions Starting February 9th

Over the last little while, there has been quite a bit of interest in having skill sessions again.  We have many new players joining us on a weekly basis, along with those who are regulars.  Many of these players are eager to improve the level of their play.

Starting on Saturday, February 9th, we will be reintroducing the skill sessions. These skill sessions will be tailored for advanced beginners and intermediate players who want to develop their game further. We are hoping to have volunteer coaches lead these sessions on a rotational basis about once a month. Each week, the skill session will focus on a different skill such as serving strategically, dinking, third shot soft, court strategies, back hand shots, lobs, punch shots, etc.

Beginners will continue to play on Court One on Saturday but at a new time, from 10:45-11:45AM. Court Two will be set aside for open play focusing on the weekly skill being taught and Court Three will be used for focused teaching and practice on a specific skill. Most likely, we will have to rotate players on Court Three with players on the other courts as deemed necessary to get adequate teaching and practice time of the weekly skill. At the end of a five or six week cycle, skills will be retaught for newer players coming into the sport, or for those wanting further instruction.

Upcoming Events at South Delta Baptist Church

Men’s Snowshoeing on Saturday, February 9th

Our men's ministry will be going snowshoeing on February 9th. We would like to be on the mountain and hiking by 9AM, and expect to hike for about three hours. This snowshoeing event does not require any technical ability but will require good physical fitness as this is about a seven kilometre round trip that includes climbing. The plan would be to snowshoe and then grab lunch, at a location to be determined prior to the day of the hike.

If you are interested in attending this event, please visit our website for more information and to register. Registration is required and will close on Sunday, February 3rd. If you need to rent snowshoes for this event, the cost is $20, otherwise to only cost is for gas and lunch money.

Senior Scene Luncheons

Senior Scene Luncheons are for senior couples, singles, widows, and widowers from within our church, seniors residences, and the community. Come enjoy a home-style lunch, uplifting music, and warm fellowship while learning principles of life from the bible through various speakers and musicians. Luncheons take place every third Tuesday of each month at 11:30AM. Suggested donation of $5. Lunch is free if you are a first-time visitor.

Community Dinner

SDBC hosts a Community Dinner for those who are in need of a nice meal or friendship. This is one of the ways we share the love of Jesus Christ with our community. The Community Dinner takes place on the first Tuesday of each month. This month it takes place on February 5th.
