New Lynn Coalition Welcomes Tish Mukala as our first Vice President
New Lynn Coalition recently introduced a Vice President position to our Executive Committee, and at our February board meeting we voted for who of the 5 nominees would fill this role. We would like to welcome Tish Mukala, president of the Highlands Coalition, to our Executive Committee as New Lynn’s first Vice President!

La Coalición de New Lynn recientemente presentó la posición de Vice-Presidente al Comité Ejecutivo, y a los miembros que asistieron a la reunión mensual de Febrero; los cuales nominaron a 5 personas que serían buenas para esta posición. La Coalición al final le dió la más cordial bienvenida a Tish Mukala, Presidente de la Coalición Highlands, a nuestro Comité Ejecutivo como la primera Vice-Presidente de New Lynn.
A Note From Vice President Tish:
I am Tish Mukala, Nurse Practitioner and resident of Lynn since 1993 and co-chair of the Highlands Coalition, Lynn, MA.
When I was growing up, I was always told that girls were not important. In the community where I grew up in the Democratic Republic of Congo, elementary and high schools were not free. So most parents sent their sons to school while their daughters stayed home to learn house chores and be prepared to become housewives. Thus girls were often forced into marriage at young age without education or skills needed to help them in life, consequently they were left to live in poverty.
After seeing this over and over, I started to look for a way out of the cycle. This led me and other women at my church to start a women’s movement and I became a leader of that movement.
In 1993, I moved to the USA and to live in Lynn, MA. This is where I came to appreciate that boys and girls have the same rights and opportunities. They can both go to school and become anything they want to be.
In year 2000, our women’s movement was changed to “Woman, Cradle of Abundance”, we begin teaching young girls how to read and write as well as learning trading skills such as sewing, economic empowerment and basic human rights. I am still an active participant of the organization.
I am very interested in and planing to using my experience of helping others in the community overcome challenges in their lives in my new role as VP of the New Lynn Coalition.

Soy Tish Mukala, Enfermera Practicante y residente de Lynn desde 1993 y Co-Presidente de la Coalición Highlands, Lynn, MA.
Cuando estaba creciendo, siempre me dijeron que las niñas no son importantes. En la comunidad en donde crecí, la República Democrática del Congo, la escuela primaria y secundaria no fue gratis. La mayoría de los padres envían a los hijos varones a la escuela, mientras las hijas se quedan en casa par aprender las tareas del hogar y ser preparadas para ser esposas. Aunque niñas son frecuentemente forzadas a casarse a temprana edad sin educación o habilidades que le ayuden en su vida, consecuentemente son abandonadas para que vivan en pobreza.
Después de ver esto una y otra vez, empecé a buscar la manera de salirme de este ciclo. Esto me llevó a mí y a otras mujeres de mi iglesia a empezar un movimiento de liberación femenina y me convertí en la líder de este movimiento.
In 1993, me mudé a los Estados Unidos y vine a vivir a Lynn, MA. Fue aquí cuando vine a darme cuenta que los niños y niñas tienen los mismos derechos y oportunidades. Ambos pueden ir a la escuela y llegar a ser lo que quieren llegar a ser. En el año 2000, nuestro movimiento de liberación femenino fue nombrado a “Woman, Cradle of Abundance” (Mujeres, Cuna de Abundancia), empezamos a enseñar a niñas pequeñas a leer y a escribir, asi como también habilidades de comercio tales como costura, empoderamiento económico y sus derechos básicos como ser humano. Todavía sigo siendo una participante activa en esta organización.
Estoy bastante interesada en esto y planeo usar mi experiencia para ayudar a otros en la comunidad a vencer sus desafíos en mi nuevo rol como VP de la Coalición New Lynn.
