The 2020 census is more important than ever, with communities across the country in dire need of funding and governmental services. Make sure your family and community are counted TODAY by visiting https://my2020census.gov/, calling 844-330-2020 (English)/844-468-2020 (Spanish) or responding by mail (you should have received a paper questionnaire if you haven't responded via phone or website).

Shine Together is a worker-owned cleaning and catering coop operated by Latinx and African-American ECCO leaders.
In response to COVID-19, Shine Together’s catering unit is preparing to launch Shine Together Delivers. Shine Together Delivers will be a joint effort of Shine Together worker-owners and ECCO Solidarity Volunteers to offer delicious food, grocery shopping, and delivery during this time of crisis.

Testing for COVID-19 is available for everyone in the Greater Lynn Community at Lynn Community Health Center. You may be tested regardless of your symptoms or exposure to COVID-19. Call 781-581-3900 for a testing appointment. Limited walk-ins are available on a first-come, first-served basis. You do not need to be a patient at LCHC.

New Lynn Coalition Program Updates

Food Delivery:
Last week, NLC staff member Neil Whittredge coordinated New Lynn Coalition’s first ever food distribution program. Previously ran by the North Shore Labor Council, the food delivery service has helped hundreds of Lynn families. Neil hopes to continue that work, starting with 55 families with the hope of expanding to 85 the next week and so on and so forth. Thank you to the volunteers who packed groceries and/or delivered them- we are so appreciative and could not do this work without you. Email northshorefoodaid@gmail.com to get involved!
Diverse Hiring Committee:
Recently, NLC’s Diverse Hiring Committee got the opportunity to meet with Dr. Tutwiler, the superintendent of the Lynn Public Schools. We discussed the need for a teaching staff that better reflects the diversity of Lynn, and heard from Dr. Tutwiler about his plan for increasing the percentage of teachers of color within LPS by 1% each year. He also highlighted other equity efforts, including diversity and inclusion training tailored to LPS leadership, soon to be introduced to broader teaching staff come January. The committee plans to meet with Dr. Tutwiler again in late September to focus on the implementation of Diverse Hiring Committees at individual schools, a proposal brought forth by NLC board member Jacqueline Fitzhugh.
Police Reform Work:
Several NLC board members and staff including Executive Director Jeff Crosby have been involved in budget meetings with city officials and council members. Through these conversations they have discussed the need for a non-police affiliated response team made up of mental health professionals and others who can address situations like noise complaints without the need for police involvement. Moreover, NLC has been supportive of various recently formed organizations tackling police reform work including Prevent the Cycle and Diverse People United.
Financial Aid Distribution:
For the last several weeks, NLC staff member Michelle Guzman has been spearheading NLC’s financial aid distribution to members of our partner orgs who are in need of assistance during these trying times, regardless of documentation their status. Thank you to the Essex County Community Foundation for entrusting us and other local nonprofits with this important responsibility. So far we have had the opportunity to help 75 families and look forward to helping more Lynn residents in the coming weeks.
Housing Work:
At the August NLC board meeting we were joined by Aaron Clausen, the Principal Planner for the City of Lynn. We discussed a path towards more affordable housing in Lynn as he fielded questions from board members on topics ranging from inclusionary zoning, municipal politics and more. We look forward to continuing to work with Mr. Clausen in the coming weeks, months and years on fighting for a more equitable Lynn where all residents have access to the housing they need and deserve.

Transition Announcement from NLC staff member and
JOIN for Justice Fellow Roxy Rozo-Marsh:
Hello NLC family!
This is a bittersweet announcement because it marks the end of my time with NLC. While I am excited for my next adventure working in the field of immigrant legal advocacy in Chicago, this is certainly a hard organization to leave. I have learned so much from my time with New Lynn and will treasure the amazing memories and connections I have made over the past 12 months. I am especially grateful to the other NLC staff members, including my incredible supervisor Jon Feinberg. And of course, the board members and their organizations have my undying appreciation and will continue to serve as an inspiration for me as I pursue other organizing opportunities. Thank you so much for having me this past year!
That said, while my role within NLC is coming to an end, I am thrilled to announce that another person will be joining the team. Come September 1st, Connor Will will be NLC's newest intern from Salem State. He cannot wait to start working with you all and will undoubtedly be a great asset to the community! As they say- when one door closes, another door opens.

For Calling the Spirit Back from Wandering the Earth in Its Human Feet
This poem was written by Joy Harjo of the Muscogee Creek Nation; the first Native American to be appointed Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress. She was first appointed in 2019 (when she wrote this piece) and was reappointed this year. Her work is not only beautiful, but incredibly impactful during these challenging times when many are feeling disconnected from themselves, the earth and the world at large.

Put down that bag of potato chips, that white bread, that bottle of pop.
Turn off that cellphone, computer, and remote control.
Open the door, then close it behind you.
Take a breath offered by friendly winds. They travel the earth gathering essences of plants to clean.
Give it back with gratitude.
If you sing it will give your spirit lift to fly to the stars’ ears and back.
Acknowledge this earth who has cared for you since you were a dream planting itself precisely within your parents’ desire.
Let your moccasin feet take you to the encampment of the guardians who have known you before time, who will be there after time. They sit before the fire that has been there without time.
Let the earth stabilize your postcolonial insecure jitters.
Be respectful of the small insects, birds and animal people who accompany you.
Ask their forgiveness for the harm we humans have brought down upon them.
Don’t worry.
The heart knows the way though there may be high-rises, interstates, checkpoints, armed soldiers, massacres, wars, and those who will despise you because they despise themselves.
The journey might take you a few hours, a day, a year, a few years, a hundred, a thousand or even more.
Watch your mind. Without training it might run away and leave your heart for the immense human feast set by the thieves of time.
Do not hold regrets.
When you find your way to the circle, to the fire kept burning by the keepers of your soul, you will be welcomed.
You must clean yourself with cedar, sage, or other healing plant.
Cut the ties you have to failure and shame.
Let go the pain you are holding in your mind, your shoulders, your heart, all the way to your feet. Let go the pain of your ancestors to make way for those who are heading in our direction.
Ask for forgiveness.
Call upon the help of those who love you. These helpers take many forms: animal, element, bird, angel, saint, stone, or ancestor.
Call your spirit back. It may be caught in corners and creases of shame, judgment, and human abuse.
You must call in a way that your spirit will want to return.
Speak to it as you would to a beloved child.
Welcome your spirit back from its wandering. It may return in pieces, in tatters. Gather them together. They will be happy to be found after being lost for so long.
Your spirit will need to sleep awhile after it is bathed and given clean clothes.
Now you can have a party. Invite everyone you know who loves and supports you. Keep room for those who have no place else to go.
Make a giveaway, and remember, keep the speeches short.
Then, you must do this: help the next person find their way through the dark.
