Dear Timberlake Family,
Your Church Council had a very productive and God-honoring meeting last evening.
The main topic was the Straw Poll results and the next steps. 80.2% of voting members present are in favor of disaffiliation. Given the significant majority, Council reached a consensus to move forward with requesting an official vote hosted by our District Superintendent, Rev. Denise Bates.
More information will follow (mailed letters and emails to all members) when the District Superintendent provides us with a date and time. Per Virginia Conference rules, members must be present to vote. And a vote to disaffiliate requires 66.6% in favor.
Council is also working on plans for what happens after the official vote (if the members vote to disaffiliate). We acknowledge that a vote to disaffiliate from the United Methodist denomination implies going to something else. And two critical questions are: What will Timberlake become? And how will Timberlake get there?
Council is working on providing detailed answers, but for now, here are some highlights:
1. We must change our name from Timberlake United Methodist Church to something else. To have a name for corporate papers, due to the timing of needing a name, Council is recommending “Timberlake Church.” We can change the name again later.
2. Until we have had time to study our options regarding affiliation with another denomination and consider being an independent church, Timberlake will continue to function with all our current governance committees. Church Council, Staff Parish Relations Committee, Trustees, and Finance Committee will continue to lead the church in significant decisions and planning.
Council is committed to effectively communicating with our Timberlake family. Members should be on the lookout for a letter and email regarding the official church vote.
