Events & Activities

The renovation of the Center continued through the month of October.  It brought with it enthusiastic work-offerings from the members. On Saturday, October 12th at 4:00 pm we held a retreat with the theme "Significance of Flowers". Impeccably organized by Hansa and Alpa, the program offered insights gathered from the Mother's writings on the role of flowers in our inner growth. The Mother loved flowers and found in them a ready and receptive medium to communicate consciousness and develop some of the Divine qualities in us; the qualities embodied by the flowers. They can help us grow within and awaken the soul. The beauty of flowers is a means used by Nature to draw us to the psychic. Moni, a devotee, and passionate gardener, shared her experiences with us on how flowers can positively affect our psychological state.

The program concluded with each of us reading in turn the significance of a flower. It was remarkable to observe that the quality that the flower signified was quite consistent with a part of the personality of the reader. It was concrete evidence of a guiding presence active in our midst; the power and presence of the Mother.

We invite you all to join us for Savitri reading taking place on Thursdays from 7:00-8:30 p.m. and Saturday Satsangs from 5:00-7:00 p.m every week.

THERE is a Power which no government can command, a Happiness which no earthly success can give, a Light which no wisdom can possess, a Knowledge which no philosophy, no science can acquire, a Beatitude of which no satisfaction of desire can give the enjoyment, a thirst for Love which no human relation can quench, a Peace which can be found no where, not even in death.

It is the Power, the Happiness, the Light, the Knowledge, the Beatitude, the Love and the Peace which come to us from the Divine Grace.

Prayers and Meditations

The Truth of Divine Grace
THERE can be no doubt about the Divine Grace. It is perfectly true also that if a man is sincere, he will reach the Divine. But it does not follow that he will reach immediately, easily and without delay. Your error is there, to fix for God a term, five years, six years, and doubt because the effect is not yet there. A man may be centrally sincere and yet there may be many things that have to be changed in him before realisation can begin. His sincerity must enable him to persevere always—for it is a longing for the Divine that nothing can quench, neither delay nor disappointment nor difficulty nor anything else.

The Mothers Help and Grace
THE Mother’s help is always there for those who are willing to receive it. But you must be conscious of .your vital nature, and the vital must consent to change. It is no use merely observing that it is unwilling and that, when thwarted, it creates depression in you. Always the vital nature is not at first willing and always when it is thwarted or asked to change, it creates this depression by its revolt or refusal of consent. You have to insist till it recognises the truth and is willing to be transformed and to accept the Mother’s help and Grace. If the mind is sincere and the psychic aspiration complete and true, the vital can always be made to change.

Faith in the Victory of Divine Grace
You must throw all that away. Such depression can make you shut to what Mother is giving you. There is absolutely no good reason for such an attitude. The existence of difficulties is a known thing in Yoga. That is no reason for questioning the final victory or the effectuality of the Divine Grace.
Action of Divine Grace
"THE ordinary action of the Divine is a constant intervention within the actual law of things"—that may or may not be but is not usually called the Divine Grace. The Divine Grace is something not calculable, not bound by anything the intellect can fix as a condition,—though ordinarily some call, aspiration, intensity of the psychic being can awaken it, yet it acts sometimes without any apparent cause even of that kind.

Working of Grace
IT is not indispensable that the Grace should work in a way that the human mind can understand, it generally doesn’t: it works in its own "mysterious" way. At first usually it works behind the veil, preparing things, not manifesting. Afterwards it may manifest, but the sadhak does not understand very well what is happening; finally, when he is capable of it, he both feels and understands or at least begins to do so. Some feel and understand from the first or very early; but that is not the ordinary case.

THERE is nothing unintelligible in what I say about strength and Grace. Strength has a value for spiritual realisation, but to say that it can be done by strength only and by no other means is a violent t exaggeration. Grace is not an invention, it is a fact of spiritual experience. Many who would be considered as mere nothings by the wise and strong have attained by Grace. Illiterate, without mental power or training, without strength of character and will, they have yet aspired and suddenly or rapidly grown into spiritual realisation, because they had faith or because they were sincere. I do not see why these facts which are facts of spiritual history and of quite ordinary spiritual experience should be discussed and denied and argued as if they were mere matters of speculation.

Strength, if it is spiritual, is a power for spiritual realisation; a greater power is sincerity; a greatest power of all is Grace. I have said times without number that if a man is sincere, he will go through in spite of long delay and overwhelming difficulties. I have repeatedly spoken of the Divine Grace. I have referred any number of times to the line of the Gita:
"I will deliver you from all sin and evil, do not grieve."*

From Letters on Yoga

The Golden Light

Thy golden Light came down into my brain
And the grey worms of mind sun-touched became
A bright reply to Wisdom’s occult plane,
A calm illumination and a flame.
Thy golden Light came down into my throat,
And all my speech is now a tune divine,
A paean-song of thee my single note;
My words are drunk with the Immortal’s wine.
Thy golden Light came down into my heart
Smiting my life with Thy eternity;
Now has it grown a temple where Thou art
And all its passions  point towards only Thee.
Thy golden Light come down into my feet
My earth is now thy playfield and thy seat.

Faith in the Divine Grace and Help

Have a steady faith in the divine Grace.
Continue to have full faith in the Divine's Grace, Will and Action and all will be all right.
6 November 1934

All depends on the intensity of the faith and the firmness of the right attitude.
 30 May 1935

The Grace is always with you; concentrate in your heart with a silent mind and you are sure also to receive the guidance and the help you aspire for.
The Grace and the help are always there for all who aspire for them and their power is limitless when received with faith and confidence.
The Grace is always there ready to act but you must let it work and not resist its action. The one condition required is faith. When you feel attacked, call for help to Sri Aurobindo and myself. If your call is sincere (that is to say, if you sincerely want to be cured) your call will be answered and the Grace will cure you.

Yes, faith in the Grace always brings about its intervention.
For the Grace to have a perfect and total result of its action, the faith must be total and perfect.
Once more, the lack of faith of the human mind brings complications and pain where with a quiet faith in the Divine Guidance all could be very simple and easy.
It is for the growth of this faith and confidence that I have been working for many years.
Obviously the resistance is obstinate.
Why disappointing? If there is one in a hundred who has a true faith, it is already a miracle!
The Grace will never fail us ― such is the faith we must keep constantly in our heart.
10 May 1954

The Divine Grace is with us and never leaves us even when the appearances are dark.
17 August 1954

The Supreme's power is infinite ― it is our faith that is small.
23 August 1954

At each moment of our life, in all circumstances the Grace is there helping us to surmount all difficulties.
8 October 1954

In failure as well as in success, the Divine's Grace is always there.
1 December 1954

The closer you come to the Divine, the more you live under a shower of overwhelming evidence of His immeasurable Grace.
 5 August 1955

Our faith in the omnipotence of the Grace is never equal to what the Grace itself is.
July 1956

An absolute faith and trust in the Grace is, in the last analysis, the Supreme Wisdom.
15 August 1956

Through this apparent chaos a new and better order is being formed. But to see it one must have faith in the Divine Grace. Cheer up.
13 October 1956

In the present growing conflict what should be our attitude?
Faith and total confidence in the Divine's Grace.
2 November 1956

It is when all seems lost that all can be saved. When you have lost confidence in your personal power, then you should have faith in the Divine Grace.
28 January 1970
I mean, act according to our inner conviction regardless of all consequences and keep our faith unshaken in spite of the apparent so-called proofs to the contrary.
Surely, all this comes to teach us to have a quiet faith that what is truly needed we shall have and that, for the rest, we must not bother.
In the final analysis everything really depends on the Divine Grace and we should look at the future with confidence and serenity, progressing at the same time as quickly as we can.

In an ardent faith lies salvation.
In the final analysis, it is the Supreme Lord who does all.
We must be faithful instruments.

Quotes on Divine Grace by The Mother

All depends on what you want. If you want Yoga, take all that happens as the expression of the Divine Grace leading you towards your goal, and try to understand the lesson that circumstances give.
23 April 1964
For those who have given themselves to the Divine each difficulty that confronts them is the assurance of a new progress and thus must be taken as a gift from the Grace.
19 June 1966

When difficulties besiege you, know that the Divine Grace is with you.
People believe that the Grace means making everything smooth for all your life. It is not true.
The Grace works for the realisation of your aspiration and everything is arranged to gain the most prompt, the quickest realisation.
 26 May 1967

The Grace is something that pushes you towards the goal to be attained. Do not try to judge it by your mind, you will not get anywhere, because it is something formidable which is not explained through human words or feelings. When the Grace acts, the result may or may not be ― pleasant it takes no account of any human value, it may even be a catastrophe from the ordinary and superficial point of view. But it is always the best for the individual. It is a blow that the Divine sends so that progress may be made by leaps and bounds. The Grace is that which makes you march swiftly towards the realisation.
Question and Answer - The Mother
Q: Even after the sadhaks have complete faith and surrender, have they to wait long to get the higher experiences by the Divine Grace?

A: If the faith and surrender are complete in every part, it is not possible that there should be no experience.

Q: How can one swiftly surrender the Purusha to the Divine?

A: By aspiration and by Divine Grace.

Empowering lines from Savitri

In an outburst of heavenly joy and ease
Life yields to the divinity within
And gives the rapture-offering of its all,
And the soul opens to felicity.
A bliss is felt that never can wholly cease,
A sudden mystery of secret Grace
Flowers goldening our earth of red desire.

Savitri, Book 2, Canto 12

In Gratitude

From my childhood I had been centered in my head.
It was in my university days that I first came across Sri Aurobindo and The Mother - naturally it was through the intellectual route.
But we all know how far that route can take us.
Indeed it is the heart that has wings - it is that which can take us swiftly on the path.

But as I said I was too centered in my head.
And here plays the Divine Grace.

The very next year I met someone and fell in love - which opened up my heart.
Through the course of the relationship my center gradually shifted from my head to my heart.
Earlier I would try to "understand" Sri Aurobindo and The Mother with my head, now I try to love them with my heart.

It was indeed Her special Act of Grace.
