6,000 Soul Boxes -- and more -- in Portland

If you're in Portland, Oregon over the next few weeks, you'll have several opportunities to experience The Soul Box Project: an exhibit, a presentation, a special Box-folding gathering, a film screening -- and a cocktail! All events are free and open to the public. (You'll have to pay for the cocktail.)
In a typical two-month period in the US, around 6,000 people will die from gunfire. Our exhibit lining the gallery area of HatchLab, a co-working space in Portland's Eastside industrial area, reveals that number to visitors in a visceral way. Each 3- by 3-inch Soul Box carries the name of a gunfire victim, an image, or a message of protest or hope.

Exhibit open: 9 am – 6 pm, Monday - Friday. Closed weekends. Through October 8. HatchLab PDX, 2420 NE Sandy Blvd., Portland, OR 97232. Free.

Soul Box Founder to Speak at HatchLab

Soul Box Founder Leslie Lee will be the featured speaker at HatchLab's monthly community gathering. Join local entrepreneurs to hear how The Soul Box Project is helping people understand the enormity of the gunfire epidemic. Can small origami boxes change our culture in a big way? Listen and find out how -- and view the current Soul Box installation.

Gathering: Wednesday, September 25, 4:30 - 6 pm. HatchLab PDX, 2420 NE Sandy Blvd., Portland, OR 97232. Free.

Film Screening and Soul Box Procession

Come to a free screening of Behind the Bullet. Take an intimate look at how taking a life forever changed four people emotionally, psychologically and spiritually in this new and unbiased perspective on gun violence. Director and producer Heidi Yewman will answer questions after the film.

If you'd like, end the evening by participating in a Soul Box Procession. We will carry bags of Soul Boxes out of the Multnomah Arts Center into Multnomah Village, ending the evening on a note of hope and solidarity -- much like our February procession at the capitol building in Salem.

Film Screening and Soul Box Procession: Friday, October 4, 6 - 8 pm. Multnomah Arts Center Auditorium, 7688 SW Capitol Hwy., Portland, OR 97219. Free, but ticket required.

Fold Soul Boxes in Hollywood District

Join volunteers for a morning of folding Soul Boxes in the lobby of the Northeast Community Center in Portland's Hollywood District.

Soul Box Folding: Wednesday, October 9, 9 - 11 am. Northeast Community Center, 1630 NE 38th Ave., Portland, OR. Free. All materials provided.

Celebrate Leslie as Freeland Free Spirit

Soul Box Project founder Leslie Lee was recently selected as a Free Spiriti by Portland craft distiller Freeland Spirits!

Freeland Free Spirits celebrate female-identifying Oregonians who are "busting through glass ceilings and soaring -- people who think and act in an uninhibited way without worrying about so-called rules or norms. Call them non-conformists, rule-benders, iconoclasts, mavericks or Bohemians," says the company.
Add one more Soul Box activity to your Portland agenda: Visit the Freeland Spirits Tasting Room to try the Soul Shine, a cocktail designed in Leslie's honor. Proceeds of the Soul Shine benefit the Soul Box Project.

Try the Soul Shine Cocktail: Sunday, Wednesday, Thursday 1 - 8 pm; Friday and Saturday noon - 10 pm. Freeland Spirits Tasting Room, 2671 NW Vaughn St., Portland, OR 97210. All proceeds go to The Soul Box Project through September.
