Term 3, Week 3

KAURI-Year 7/8
Food For Thought
Students will develop an understanding about healthy food choices and food production and its impacts.
Significant questions students will be looking to answer include-
How do we know what is healthy for us? How do we make choices about food?
Where does our food come from? Is it sustainable? Where will it head in the future? What does genetic modification look like in food? What is synthetic meat?  Can we really survive on insects?  What impact does food production have on our environment e.g pollution, waterways, pesticides
Climate Change
We are currently completing some immersion activities to build up students' knowledge about what sustainability and climate change are. We will then go on to look at what some of the issues we face around climate change are and what action we can take to inform others and try and make a positive impact in our own small (or not so small) way.
KOROMIKO- Year 3/4
“Tell me a story”
This unit is a literacy focus. We are beginning by looking at traditional stories and then moving onto sophisticated picture books. At the same time we will be writing…and although we write a variety of different text types throughout the year- our focus will be narrative writing.
KOWHAI-Year 1/2
This study will encourage students to explore different mini-beasts. The topic content will provide students with a great opportunity to share their knowledge and extend their understanding of mini-beasts.
The understandings we hope students will gain from this topic are:

  • Mini-beasts are an important part of our environment.

  • Mini-beasts have specialised jobs in their ecosystems.

  • Mini-beasts can be sorted into categories.

Kowhai Team will be visiting an education programme at the Expressions Whirinaki Arts and Entertainment Centre in Upper Hutt to see their Bugs- Our Backyard Heroes in early September to support our learning.  A notice about this trip will be sent home soon.
Are focussing on covering the curriculum with Action Stations and Play-Based Learning.

Winter Tournament - The entire Kahikatea Syndicate were involved in the Junior Winter Tournament where they competed against other local schools on Tuesday 6th August. Over one thousand students were involved. The emphasis was on trying out a new sport, sportsmanship and having fun! Some teams took part in a competitive competition while others played in a non-competitive league. Code options were Rippa, Football, Netball and Hockey. We had had two weeks of intensive practise and were ready to get out there, have fun and do Kenakena proud!

Bailey Te Tomo from Horowhenua/Kapiti Cricket Association is running the Cricket Superstars programme. Years 1/2 were provided with a 45 minute awareness lesson teaching beginner cricket skills.  As the cricket club is currently focusing on girl’s cricket, Year 7/8 girls were also introduced to basic skills.
Next term Years 4 -6 can sign up for weekly cricket development lessons during school time, leading into them participating in games against other schools on a weekly afternoon (outside school hours) during term 1 2020.
Towards the end of this term the Kahikatea Syndicate will have the Pedal Ready team in school running their FREE bike safety programme. We are really lucky to have been able to put all our year 5 and 6 students through this valuable programme aimed at giving every child the skills they need to ride their bike safely on our roads.
Your child will need a bike for this programme that is in good working order.

National Day of Support for Principals

The teachers and support staff of Kenakena School are joining with their colleagues all over the country on Friday 9 August to call on the government to give primary and intermediate principals a fair deal. And we need your support as we stand up for our principal, and all principals.

Teachers recently won pay parity with their secondary colleagues, because a teacher is a teacher, regardless of the age of their students. But the government refused to give primary and intermediate principals parity with principals of comparably sized secondary schools, or any support for growing workloads. In small schools, principals are doing a complex job but often without any extra support, and while teaching as well. And these principals are often paid less than some teachers in large schools.

We’re calling on the Government to do the right thing by principals. It’s only fair.

On Friday 9 August, we’ll be all be dressing in green. Please come out and support the principals of Aotearoa, who do such a vital job leading the teaching and learning in our schools.
