Term 1, Week 8

Notices gone home this week:

Koromiko - Island Bay Trip Notice

We, at Kenakena School, join together with the rest of the country, in being deeply saddened by the event in Christchurch last Friday. We send our love, our aroha, to all affected directly or indirectly by this event. We stand together with welcoming arms to our Muslim brothers and sisters. Our school, is your school.
At the start of our Moving March Parade this Friday at 9:05 we will stand to observe one minute’s silence to honour those who died and to reflect on how we can positively live our lives, and do our part to make our place, our community, a place for all.
Our students have been wanting to show support to the students of the Christchurch schools.
Below we have students from Rooms 21 and 22 who have made paper dolls that will be connected to show we are all in this together. They have written messages of support on the back of each doll.

Tips for parents from the Ministry of Education

Parents can help children and young people feel safe by;
· providing reassurance and keeping to routines
· staying calm and promoting a calm environment
· doing enjoyable things together
· taking time to listen and talk
Be guided by their questions, be factual and age appropriate with your response. Children and young people do not always talk about their feelings readily – ask them if they are feeling worried.
Keep your explanations developmentally appropriate.

  • Very young children need brief, simple information that should be balanced with reassurances that their ELS, school and homes are safe and that adults are there to protect them.

  • Older primary school aged children will be more vocal in asking questions about whether they truly are safe and what is being done at their school. They may need assistance separating reality from fantasy. Discuss efforts of school, emergency services and community leaders to provide safe schools.

Information from Netsafe

Netsafe has received a number of reports of online content relating to the attacks in Christchurch. Footage of the attacks has been deemed objectionable under New Zealand law which means that possessing or distributing the footage is an offence. Anyone who finds footage of the attacks online should report it to Netsafe at https://www.netsafe.org.nz/report/ but they should not keep copies or share it.
The footage of the Christchurch attacks is disturbing and will be harmful for people to see. If students have viewed the video and are struggling with what they have seen it’s likely they will require additional support. Agencies which can provide free support include YouthlineNeed to Talk and Kidsline.
While the content is online there is some risk that children or young people may come across it. Netsafe encourages schools and parents to proactively discuss with young people what they should do if they come across distressing content online. Further information is available at netsafe.org.nz/upsetting-content
If parents or schools have questions relating to this incident or other distressing online content they can contact Netsafe for free and confidential advice at netsafe.org.nz or call 0508 NETSAFE.

Juicies are BACK!!

You can pre purchase your jucies for just $1 with your child's lunch order on Fridays.

Children will receive a stamp (or similar) to indicate they have pre purchased a juicie.

Your child will then be able to collect their juicie from outside the hall on Friday from 3pm.

The' juicie ladies' will have a list of names of those who have pre purchased.

It will also be possible to purchase from outside the hall at 3pm on Fridays.

Please be patient as we trial this new system.

Order Forms Here with juicies on.

Please use these order forms from now on as some of the prices have changed.  Place order forms and money in a sealed envelope in the Blue Post Box in the administration foyer before 9am. Correct money is always appreciated. Change of less than $1 will not be given. Change of $1 or more will be returned to your children in the Friday lunch basket.

Friday Lunches

Orders

If you have ordered your child’s lunch through Kindo and then for some reason they will not be at school for lunch that day, you can cancel the order and the payment will be credited to your account.  You must do it before 9am on Friday though.  To cancel the order, go to “My Orders” on Kindo and select “cancel” next to the order.  If you do not cancel the order, we cannot do it for you and we cannot credit your account.

If you have ordered your child’s lunch by placing an order form and money in the blue box in the office, and your child leaves school before lunchtime, we are unable to refund the order or carry it over to the next week. This is because the food would have been ordered from the supplier and paid for.”
