Term 2, Week 5

The Kenakena School Cross Country Races were squeezed in between showers on Tuesday this week.  A large turnout of parents, grandparents and other family as spectators and supporters added to the atmosphere of the occasion.  What was impressive was the commitment to doing their best by the great majority of children and also the support given to runners by the rest of the school, especially to those children who came in near the end of the placings who had obviously run hard.
Thanks to the Kenakena School Parent Network for honouring the hard work of the kids by running the Family Frenzy Flour Run afterwards!  A great way to end the day!

Well done, Kenakena!  Exciting!  Motivating!  Positive!

I would also like to commend Sue Hawkins for her fantastic organization of the event.

This was a terrific follow-up to the children’s exploration of Paraparaumu Beach the week before (see the May 16 School Newsletter), as they transitioned to from sand shore to rocky shore exploration for their science study.  Value was added by the hands-on learning activities at the Marine Education Centre under the guidance and expertise of their education staff.
(More photographs on our Facebook Page)

Last week, the current mentoring group participated in a hands-on healthy eating and food preparation lesson followed by a cooking lesson.  Teamwork and cooperation were a major focus as well!  See the photos on our Facebook Page.

The strike was primarily about pay and conditions in our collective employment agreements in relation to the latest offer from the Ministry of Education. Our job size increase over the last 10 years does not correspond with the pay increase being offered.

Addressing this is well overdue. Kenakena’s teachers are highly trained education professionals who keep up to date with research-based best practice. They get on with the job as professionals and deliver what we as a school and the Ministry of Education expects of them. They want no more than being valued as professionals through their contract provisions for pay and conditions.

It was not ideal for you as parents to have to make other arrangements while we stopped work. My staff and I fully appreciate that, and also the positive messages of support and encouragement we have received.

Netball season is now under way and we have alot of teams at Te Atiawa Park courts each Saturday representing their school with pride.  For spectators the action on the court is very close to the sideline and can result in over-exuberant parents being intensely vocal.  At times, opposition players and volunteer umpires are the subject of negative comments from the sideline.  This can result in official complaints to the Principal from the Netball Association requesting that the parents or supporters making the negative comments are identified and spoken to.  It’s not a great feeling when that happens as it tarnishes the reputation of our school.
Please remember, kids play sport mainly for enjoyment.  They work hard to win and are naturally disappointed when they lose.  That’s sport!
Please be mindful of the comments you make and the volume at which you make them.  Also be mindful that all the umpires are volunteers, doing their best and that the games would not take place if without their presence.

The Koromiko - Oral Presentation

Students have been given their oral presentation roster for this term. Each class has their own…so parents need to check school bags if they have not seen these yet.

Hosting an International Student can be an enriching experience for all involved.  Your family will be able to ‘show off’ some of our beautiful country and at the same time learn about a different culture from the comfort of your own home.   In turn, we hope the students will leave with many happy memories of staying with a Kapiti Coast family and studying at Kenakena School.

The requirements for hosting a student are that:

  • you are willing to care for and supervise the student as you do for your own children.

  •  that you treat the student with respect and make them feel part of the family.

  •  that everyone living in your home over 18 years of age undergoes a Police Vet.

  •  that the student has his or her own bedroom or shares a double room with a child of the same sex.

  •  that you provide safe transport to and from school (walking is fine if accompanied or your children normally do this) and reasonable access to the Internet.

  •  that you keep the school informed of any problems with the student or changes in your circumstances.

Host families are supported by the school’s pastoral care programme and a homestay payment of $300 is made weekly to host families.

We have students already confirmed from China that are arriving in Term 3 - July 2019 for between 1 to 4 weeks.
If  you are interested to host, please contact Renee Pellikaan, Homestay Co-ordinator, Phone work 2984011 or email
