Term 2, Week 3

Beach Day Out

What a terrific resource we have in Paraparaumu Beach!  Yesterday, children from the Koromiko Team (Years 3&4) walked to the beach for a science activity.  They utilized 1-metre grids to identify wildlife and objects of interest in different parts of the tidal zone.  When I visited, the children were full of enthusiasm and excitement!

Many thanks to the parents who made themselves available for this field trip.  I love the way you were engaging with the kids and sharing in their excitement.  Many other photos from the trip can be viewed on Kenakena School’s Facebook Page at

Christine, Justin and Mel from St John New Zealand have been working in the school this week to deliver a basic first aid programme to your children.  This is an important aspect of our Health Programme at Kenakena.  Knowing what to do when someone suffers an accident or injury is an essential life skill.

Students from Room 21 undertaking an interactive group activity during their first aid class on Wednesday.

See our Kenakena Facebook Page for more photos.

Primary and Secondary Teachers and Principals have voted to carry out a one-day strike on Wednesday 29 May 2019.  As all Kenakena’s teachers are union members, no one will be available to supervise your children on that day.  Consequently, Kenakena School will be closed for instruction. Please make alternative arrangements for your children.
A strike is always a last resort.  The Ministry of Education’s latest pay offer is way below expectations for members.  The profession of teaching has become increasingly complex.  The work teachers and principals undertake to meet the Ministry of Education’s goals and expectations is not supported by sufficient teacher release time, adequate resourcing or increase in salary to reflect a hugely increased job size.

Please be aware that the time before 8.30am is teacher preparation time.  Please do not send your children to school prior to 8.30am, as they will not be supervised.

Bruce McDonald

School News

Friday the 17th of May is Pink Shirt Day.

This is a national bullying prevention campaign run by the Mental Health Foundation of New Zealand.   We are encouraging students to wear something pink tomorrow to show their support to end bullying.

Pink Shirt Day began in Canada in 2007 when two students took a stand against bullying at their school after a new student was bullied for wearing pink.

While all young people can be the target of bullying, some are more likely to be targeted than others.
These are often people that are perceived as different in some way from the mainstream Majority.
We have a huge problem with bullying in New Zealand in fact we are the 9th in the world for the highest rates of bullying experienced by students.

We don’t like that statistic so we are asking students today to help change that right here at Kenakena!

On these days, please send your Year 5 & 6 child to school wearing comfortable clothes and wearing sock.
The students will be taken by bus from School to Kapiti Gymnastics, Mazengarb Road.
There is a small cost involved to cover transport
Cost per student $ 11.00 per child, payable on Kindo or at the school office.

Treat your mum or nana to a home grown beauty!

Kenakena’s keen gardeners will be selling produce as available on Friday afternoons, by the juicy stand.
Look out for Earlicheer jonquils and geraniums.

All proceeds support the Kenakena Vegetable Garden

Hosting an International Student can be an enriching experience for all involved.  Your family will be able to ‘show off’ some of our beautiful country and at the same time learn about a different culture from the comfort of your own home.   In turn, we hope the students will leave with many happy memories of staying with a Kapiti Coast family and studying at Kenakena School.

The requirements for hosting a student are that:

  • you are willing to care for and supervise the student as you do for your own children.

  •  that you treat the student with respect and make them feel part of the family.

  •  that everyone living in your home over 18 years of age undergoes a Police Vet.

  •  that the student has his or her own bedroom or shares a double room with a child of the same sex.

  •  that you provide safe transport to and from school (walking is fine if accompanied or your children normally do this) and reasonable access to the Internet.

  •  that you keep the school informed of any problems with the student or changes in your circumstances.

Host families are supported by the school’s pastoral care programme and a homestay payment of $300 is made weekly to host families.

We have students already confirmed from China that are arriving in Term 3 - July 2019 for between 1 to 4 weeks.
If  you are interested to host, please contact Renee Pellikaan, Homestay Co-ordinator, Phone work 2984011 or email

Board of Trustees Elections

Board of Trustees’ Election 2019

Kenakena School is exciting, motivating, and positive!
Our school has a strong, successful vision and culture that has produced a wonderful environment for our children in their lifelong journey of learning.  Our Principal and his team have dedicated themselves to building this environment. Many parents have made significant contributions to the development of the school - one of the more significant parent roles, often behind the scenes, is serving on the Board of Trustees.

This month we will be calling for nominations for the parent representatives to be on the Board of Trustees for the next three years.  There are five in total.  This is an opportunity to take an active governance role, to support Bruce and his fantastic staff by setting strategy, developing policy and monitoring student achievement that will continue to enhance the success of Kenakena School.

You will need a basic understanding of meeting procedures and governance and be aware of the laws and institutions that provide the environment in which the school operates.  All of these can be easily researched – what is essential is a willingness to learn and to contribute.
Any of the current Board members are more than happy to talk to you about what is involved. Get in touch via the school office and we will arrange a phone call or a chat over coffee.

The NZ Schools Trustees Association website has some more information about the election and on becoming a trustee, including a helpful video.  If you are interested, take a look.
