Term 3, Week 9

T.O.M
All four of our Kenakena Tournament of Minds teams that competed at the Regional Tournament in Wellington recently won their categories and the right to represent Kenakena in the National Final on Saturday this week.

  • Kenakena 1, Primary - The Arts Winners

  • Kenakena 2, Primary - Social Sciences Winners

  • Kenakena 3, Intermediate - Language Literature Winners

  • Kenakena 4, Intermediate - The Arts Winners

We’re extremely proud to have four teams in the National Final as we continue our pathway of success in this international problem-solving competition, having been national champions three times and international champions twice!
Things get tougher this week for our ‘Primary’ (Years 5&6) Teams.  All four teams are competing in the same division.  There is no distinction between ‘Primary’ and ‘Intermediate’ in the Nationals.

  • We have two Years 7&8 Teams and two Years 5&6 Teams competing across three categories.

  • One of our Years 5&6 Teams and one of our Years 7&8 Teams are in the same category.

  • Our Years 5&6 Teams will be competing against Years 7&8 Teams from across New Zealand.  To win will be tough!

  • Our Years 7&8 Teams are more likely to achieve success.

However, anything can happen in the heat of the competition!  Our teams will be in lockdown for three hours to respond to a challenge posed as a problem.  At the end of the lockdown, they deliver their ‘solution’ through a dramatic performance to Tournament judges.  Each team is also given a four-minute ‘spontaneous challenge’ – four minutes to solve and prepare and one minute to present the solution!

I wish, “Good Luck!” to all four teams and to their facilitators Janine McDonald and Tatia Downer for preparing our students for Saturday’s National Final.

See https://kenakena.school.nz/tournament-of-minds/ for more information about Kenakena’s success.

NETBALL SUCCESS!

Kenakena’s ‘A’ Netball Team, Kenakena Kauri played Paraparaumu Beach School ‘A’ last Saturday to earn a place in this Saturday’s Final at Te Atiawa Courts.  They won the exciting play-off match 26-22.  I’ve watched this team a few times this season and am very impressed with their spirit and their ability to fight-back from deficits to win!

Kenakena Kauri pose with their Paraparaumu Beach School opposition following last Saturday’s game.

ARTSPLASH DANCE

Kenakena Teacher Sam Edwards has been preparing a team of 48 dancers to showcase their creation at the Primary Schools ‘Dance Splash’ event at Wellington’s Michael Fowler Centre tonight.  There has been a great deal of ‘student voice’ in theme and choreography in their creation, which they performed to a very appreciative whole-school audience on Tuesday as a dress rehearsal.  Enjoy being on the big stage!

YEARS 7 AND 8 WINTER TOURNAMENT

Kenakena School Years 7&8 students competed a wide variety of sports in last week’s Senior Winter Tournament involving Kapiti Coast primary schools.  See our Facebook Page for photos Thank you to Jon Kreuzer and Sue Gray for organizing Kenakena’s involvement in this annual event.
